Three 6ther groups, not yet char" tered will possibly be coming before the commission before the month-long hearings end and will push that total over the $430,000 mark. Projected revenue tor next year coming from student activity fees will be nearer to $4000,000 according to Dave Yarborough, a student activity advisor to the com mittee and assistant to Robert Alex ander, Dean of student activities. The three groups seeking char ters are the USC Cheerleaders, the new french club and a Gay Libera tion organization. A fourth group, the USC Sailing Club had not gotten its budget request form in by IUes day's meeting. Scott Derks, commission chair Faculty I USC Professc BY SUSAN PACQUET Gamecock Staff Writer Shakespeare has quite a backing in the English Department and this was made evident last Weekend in Washington when USC was well represented at the annual meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America. It was described by one partici pant as a gathering of "who's 'who" of the Shakespeare authorities. Dr. J. Leeds Barroll, executive secretary for the national organiza tion and an English professor here, thinks that those who participated in the program from USC are some of the most capable people in the country. "They are going to help put us on the map in this particular area," Barroll said. These faculty members who par ticipated in the Washington prog ram included Dr. Carol J. Carlisle, Dr. Ann Cook Harrod, Dr. Trevor Howard-Hill and Dr. Phillip Rol linson. Rollinson, whose special interest lies in the works of Milton and Spencer, was commissioned to pre sent a paper at the meeting on the sonnets of Shakespeare. Carlisle was chairman for one session of the conference, which dealt with theatrical productions of Shakespeare, his special interest. She has written a book of criticisms by actors of the playwright's works, "Shakespeare from the Green Room." The commission spent the first half hour of the two and -one half hour session thumbing through the budget requests on an individual basis. Derks said the majority of the members came into the meeting "cold" meaning they had not seen the budget requests prior to the meeting. This is the first year of the new budget request form which is described by Derks to let the com mission"know where the money is going so we'll be able to monitor it next year." Yarborough said the new form has gotten generally good reactions from organizations sub mitting requests, except for some who thought it "unnecessary" and "a bureaucratic hassle." Barroll, who received his Ph.D. from Princeton, has taught at USC for three years. While at Vander bilt, Barroll organized the Center for Shakespeare Studies of which the Shakespeare Association of America was born. The Association has a national membership of 470. While European countries have had such organizations for many years, this is the first for th'e United States. Barroll said, "Only about 45 per cent ol the knowledge available has beei tapped. There's a great many things we don't know." One of the present activities o the Center for Shakespeare Studie, now in progress is the publicatior of the forty two volume edition o The South Carolina Shakespeare. Barroll is general editor, and thi publication has been hailed as i major accomplishment by Shakes peare scholars. Another publication founded b the center is the Shakespeari Studies, an annual edition o research, criticism and reviewi also edited by Barroll. The Shakel peare Monograph Series is a thir< offspring of the Center which wi bring together the best production of major Shakespearian plays. One of the most challenging plan now being developed Is a "corr puterized Shakespeare," bein worked only by Howard - Hill experienced in this type o research. At the conference he pre sented a paper about the use o memory banks for information per taining to Shakespeare. Besides working with the centei Barroll has written several book and papers dealing with Shakes peare's works. In a book to be put lished next fall, Barroll will dei with Shakespeare's view of pei sonalities without using the framin of Freudian psychology which often applied to his work.
