Wright Wants
For Cheerleac
Head cheerleader Bryant
Wright would like to see the
make-up of judges changed
before the upcoming cheer
leader tryouts to insure a
more equitable contest.
Currently cheerleaders
are under control of student
government, judges are cho
sen by that body and funds
are received from the athle
tic department and student
government. A bill Wright
favors which would enable
the group to get a charter,
choose its own judges and
receive its funds from the
Student Allocations Commis
sion, is scheduled to go
before the senate Wednes
day.
Judges now are two reg
ular cheerleaders, a choreog
rapher, two student senators,
Dean of Student Affairs and
a physical education depart
ment representative.
Wright said the cheerlead
ing squad proposes cheer
leaders be judged by two
instructors of the National
Cheerleaders Association,
the Dean of minority affairs,
a band department member,
two graduating cheerleaders
and a member of the physical
education department.
Practice sessions for
cheerleaders will be held 5-6
p.m., April 3,4,5,9 and 10 at

the PE center, and final try

April 11 at an undetermined
time in the PE center.
Wright stressed that all
students are eligible for the
position and that no experi
ence is necessary. Last year
two regular cheerleaders
were not even kept as alter
nates, he said. Students are
not required to come to all
practice sessions where they
are taught "two basic cheers
and two basic stunts" to both
experienced and inexperi
enced students.
Judging will be done on a
basis of one to five with five

the categories of enthu

Wright said students pre
sently serving as cheer
leaders will have to tryout
also.
