Eat Nat Forward Nate Davis of Colum bia's Eau Claire High School, consi dered by many the top prep basket ball player in South Carolina this past season, has signed a grant in-aid to attend Carolina. His sign ing was announced Wednesday night at the school's annual basket ball banquet in Carolina Coliseum. A 6-5, 190 pound four-year starter for the Shamrocks, Davis was hon ored at the banquet as the recipient of the Frank McGuire Excellence in Basketball Award, named after the veteran USC coach and pre sented annually to the state's out standing schoolboy basketballer. The winner of the award is chosen by a board of high school coaches ~ Texas For Re. If you want to begin a track sea son with a bunch of wins, it's not advisable to start the season with three meets in nine days in track crazy Texas, like Carolina did over the Spring break. Davis averaged 17.5 points, 18.2 rebounds and shot 49 per cent from the floor in leading Eau Claire to a 23-1 season and the S. C. Class AAAA championship. He hit the winning basket with four seconds left in the state finals that gave the Shamrocks a 72-,71 win over pre viously undefeated defending champion Middleton and broke their 54 game winning streak. An All-State selection, Davis was also picked by the Columbia Trip Prim st of Traci of six in another and second out of four in the other. But McClure wa: not discouraged. "We accomplished a lot of what we wanted to," McClure said. "A few of the performances were not as good as we had hoped, but this might be because we have a lot of freshmen who were competing foi the first time against really top competition. This was especially true in the meet with Texas and Rice (plus Houston, March 17). "You've got to figure that Texas is one of the top two teams in the nation," McClure said. "They've beaten Tennessee and Kansas State already this year. And Rice has a lot of quality performers." During the trip two school records were set. Bill Bryan, 15-6 in the pole vault, and Don Layden, 14:11 in the three-mile. In all eight Gamecocks attained personal bests on the Texas tour. In the three meets the Gamecocks were able to pick up just seven first places, all but two in the meet March 20 against Lamar, Northwestern Louisiana and McNeese State. Possessed of trememd ous spring, he captured 20 or more rebounds in seven games this past season and is also a track standout, sharing the state high school high jump record of 6-4 three-fourths, set last spring as a junior. He averaged 16 points and a like number of rebounds as a junior after posting 13.5 ppg and 14 rpg marks his sophomore year. Carolina came out of the gate slow and and at halftime Memphis was very much in control of the situation, leading 39-24. While they showed no signs of being able to stay with the Tigers in the first half, the Gamecocks went at Memphis with a man-to-man press in the second half and- with just under six minutes left crawled to within five, 68-63. Memphis went on to thrash Kan sas State, a team which had beaten a far more talented and stupid team, Southwestern Louisiana, to get to the finals. Ebron, 6-9, took down a rebound and began to lead a fast break. Just as he got over the mid-court - line he turned and threw the ball to Lamar, who was trailing the play, on the other side of the line. The backcourt violation gave the ball back to the Wildcats, who froze the ball to ice the win. In the consolation game Carolina came back after another slow start to beat the Cajuns, who played most of the game as though they wanted to be somewhere else, 90-85. Freshman Alexander English, made the All-tourney team and was the Gamecock star. He had 22 points, 20 in the second half when USC overtook the Cajuns. Memphis had little trouble gett ing rid of K-State. The Wildcats were able to stay close in the first half with their patterned offense holding the Tigers back. But when Memphis began to draw the Wil dcats into their style of play, K State began to take some wild shots and the game was locked up by the middle of the second half. Kenon got into foul trouble early but that just made Finch the center of the Tiger attack. He ended with 34 points and was unquestionably the MVP for the tournament. Memphis went to the finals with a lot of momentum and they kept that momentum by beating Provi dence (minus a healthy Marvin Barnes) to get the right to meet the Walton Gang. Before the championship Kenon insisted that he was not in awe of Walton or UCLA, and that he thought Walton could be handled one-on-one. He probably thinks otherwise now.
