There was Larry Finch, 6-2,, making shots at impossible angles to lead Memphis State over Providence in the first game. And even Providence had Victor Thomas A. Tommy Curtis, 5-11, had to come off the bench to spark UCLA to their inevitable win over the stub born Big Ten champs. So when it came to the final game it was only fitting and timely that the performance of this tournament, or of any tour, nament, come from a big man. And 6-11 Bill Walton did have .quite a game. He was all over the court blocking shots, scor ing 44 points (on 21-22 from the field), fouling (he was forced to sit out the last four minutes of the first half with three fouls) and goaltending (seven times). He was, to say the least, awesome. The spectacular thing about Walton's show was that it didn't come against some mediocre team, but it came against a team with two f'ormidable big men. Memphis State got to St. Louis by blitzing Carolina and Kansas State in the Midwest Regional in Houston. They probably were not all that much better than Carolina or K-State (they beat USC 90-76, K-State 92-72), but for that week-end they couldn't be stopped. They got an outstanding game from 6-9 Larry Kenon and Finch in the Carolina game. Finch did it on the outside, hitting shots while making moves in mid-air to draw fouls (he had four three point plays) and handling the ball when it came time to run the clock out. He ended up with 25 points. )YD PINK FLOyD A tom Heart Mother s Last As good as Finch was on the outside, Kenon was his equal inside.
