Freshr BY STEVE PARKER Sports Writer' WICHITA--Almost a month ago Carolina played a seemingly mean ingless exhibition game with Athletes in Action, in which none of the Gamecock regulars saw action, but following the affair Coach Frank McGuire said that the game would do some good. "It will help get some of the freshmen ready for the tournaments," said the coach. But those words seemed also insignificant, for why would freshmen who saw scarely any action during the regular season be needed or even used in something as vital as tournament play? Well, as it turned out, McGuire's foresight was correct as his freshmen reserves played a major role in the Gamecock's first round NCAA tournament victory over Texas Tech, 78-70, Saturday after noon March 10 at Wichita. The victory in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament advances USC to a match-up with Missouri Valley Conference winner Memphis State Thursday, March 15 at Houston. Carolina went to the regionals last year after their first round win over Temple, but North Carolina annihilated them in the Eastern Regionals. Foul trouble forced USC regulars Brian Winters and Danny Traylor to the bench very early in the sec ond period, but frontcourt reserves Mark Greiner and Bob Mathias filled in more than adequately. In fact, Greiner made two key baskets late in the game which prevented Tech from making a serious com eback threat on the lead when it appeared that they would, and Mathias pulled down some late rebounds which kept Carolina in possession of the ball when the Red Raiders needed it most. But while the two freshmen came through as needed, their perfor mances did not overshadow that of team captain Kevin Joyce who fired in 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to propel the Gamecocks out of a tie at halftime into a lead and then help retain it. The Tech scoring streak overcame a short lived USC second half spurt and gave the Raiders a five-point lead 47-42. The veterans' return paid off as after a few moments of play Carolina again forged ahead and ran off five straight points to move up by three. Tech never again pulled closer than two points, reach ing that deficit only twice more. Traylor's contribution to the Thomas A. Box 386 ey Win Carolina comeback was significant as he put in six points before fouling out, but Winters lasted only about another minute after his return before exiting. When Traylor and Winters finally both fouled out, there was no longer the option to go with the freshmen McGuire was forced to do so and both came through under the pres sure excellently. And so, Carolina held off the Raider's rally attempt with a lineup of four freshmen, in Greiner, Mathias and regulars Mike Dun leavy and Alexander English, and a lone upperclassmap in Joyce. Carolina had regained the lead for good at 53-52 on a Joyce assist pass to Traylor at the 11:00 mark. Greiner made a tap-in of a missed Joyce shot which kept Carolina up by three, 55-52, during the USC scoring streak which had seen them come from behind. Greiner com plimented that play just two minutes later when he sunk a layup off of a Joyce assist, following a steal by Greinerwhen a Raider guard had attempted to lob a pass over his head to Bullock. 'Mathias' rebounds came much later, with about two minutes to play, at a time when the Raiders were pressing to come back and were instead falling further behind. The first half ended in a tie at 30 30, after Carolina had led almost the whole period. USC could not man age a score in the final 2:30 of the half and so the Tech team pulled to the deadlock. The second half was not nearly as sluggish as both team's ran more and so produced more points. Tech's chief second-half attack was to go inside to their big men Bullock and Richardson in an attempt to foul out the Carolina frontcourt. How ever, while Bullock finished with 13 second-half points and Richardson had 11, the strategy was not very successful as the rest of their attack seemed to suffer--and even after they got rid of USC's big men the replacements filled in so well. ludope I a gree Car Plan, the Student R.aip....
