Smith TO THE EDITOR: I would like to congratulate Jay Smith's stroke of political genius in running in the upcom ing election. I remember his statement of September 11, 1972, when he urged students not to vote in student elections. I would like to say that I still support you, Jay, on this note and urge. all of your followers to show their support by not vot ing. C., 29208. 10 sf 26" MEN K-Ai TO THE EDITOR, With the elections of the Stu dent Government Officials for next year just starting, I won der what students really know about what has been going on, and the people who are now running for office. Most students are aware of blatant problems at USC con cerning students-parking, tic ket distribution, and student benefits. However, many prob lems are talked about by the Student Government, while they are responsible for them. Tickets to any sports function are a hassle for every student, except the Student Government officers. We stand in line, get poor seats, while they get choice seats, and take care of their friends. The President of the Student Government gets 10 tickets to football games, and sic to basketball games. (This was told to me by a candidate for the Vice-Presidency.) What is done with these tickets? Who gets them? If not to students, are they returned to the student ticket pool? Will Dave Spinaz zola give us a certified list of what happened to his tickets? Parking also is another stu dent headache. Even purchas ing a decal does not guarantee you a spot. Why are the meters on USC property next to the lib rary enforced from 8-6 p.m., while the city meters are enforced from 9-4 p.m.? Why is the paring garage decai so expensive? What has the Stu dent Government done directly to help students-with this prob lem? What happens to all of the legislation that the Student Sen ate passes? Do they meet, or belong for the special priv eleges? What is being done about the terrible beating we take on buy ing and selling textbooks and supplies? How come certain members of the Student dovernment do not pay at Burger King? Are there any favors being exchanged? The reasons*for bringing these things. into the open are to awaken students to the fact that they can no longer be apathetic to what goes on at USC, especially the Student Government. It is our money they get to do with what they please. When we listen to the can didates, let's ask direct ques tions, and get direct answers. What we need is a Students' Government not what we have had before. We don't need Van derbuilts that say-the students be damned. 'DONALD MEMBERG Clarkson TO THE EDITOR: I noticed that Robert B. Clar kson, in an obvious effort to set up some straw men he could handle, concentrated on a mere fraction of the activity fee. The attack on the Artist Series leaves me nauseated. Mr. Clar kson admitted it was a series of Art, implied that he did not join "Columbia's richest and finest" in attendence, and at least implied that such Art is exclu sive from, and inferior to, "en tertainment." The many USC students and faculty I saw at the Virgil Fox concert seemed quite entertained. Perhaps some were not, but one must attend to find out. I realize that by the time we enter college we have all acquired somewhat differ ent tastes in music, but there is presumably aptitude for learn ing new things, new tastes. To the University we delegate the responsibility of prescribing certain stimuli not to be found at the local drive-in. Is it really too. much to expect an institu tion of higher learning to give higher priority to the higher arts? The Artist Series has been an opportunity for all of us to become Columbia's richer and finer in the best sense of the words. Until the day arrives ITON SRACER acekson Blvd. when Carolina students are turned away from Op or operas which they financially support, let's please concentrate on the abundance of genuine problems we face. I really don't know how to approach the assertion that "someone else's" money is being used to support poor chil dren. Who's money? Stolen money? The Student Union was given the funds, spent them, and Mr. Clarkson cannot decide whether to protest the spending or the source of the funds. And to anyone who hasn't an activities card, that's fine; I do hope that just,once you take a tiny bit of the you saved and try the Carlos Montoya concert or a like function. There are plenty of free activities. I'd offer you my Montoya tickets, but I believe in getting the most out of my money, too.
