The famous ol' saying. .."the grass is greener on the
other side" is a major factor of our subconscious life. We
daydream. People observe other people and wonder what
it would be like to be in their shoes. We dream about being
a movie star, the President, a famous personality.. .but for
me it was to be a college athlete. What is the "green grass"
of being a college athlete?
In the life of a college athlete, the grass turns many differ
ent shades of green as time takes its course. The first shade
of green is when you are a high school senior and colleges
come to recruit you. You can spot a high school senior from
miles away. He's got on a long sleeve letter sweater with
twenty different types of ribbons, patches, and medals dis
played. Over that he's wearing the prized letter jacket with
his name on the back (which his girl friend usually wears).
Wrapped around his jacket is the head cheerleader who
is still in uniform from last night's game. When you put ,
all of this together and have college coaches tell you you're
great.. .the grass is green. A player's life changes shades
for various reasons.
1) He become a star...the dream from childhood. Athletic
success comes from a lot of hard work resulting in team
respect. A player with team respect will unite and lead
a team in good or bad moments. A prime example is Kevin
Joyce. Kevin's finest hour was leading Carolina over
Indiana in a tremendous comeback.
2) He gets injured. ..a nighmare from childhood. In every
sport, you run the risk of being injured...sometimes for life.
The athlete may hurt his ankle, knee, shoulder, hand,... any
thing... anytime. This casts a dreary shade upon the life
of an athlete. The definition of a loser is someone who gets
knocked down and stays down. A winner gets knocked down
and works his way back up. Mike Haggard was injured
for the season early his junior year. He was knocked down.
His senior/'year was filled with success... he worked his
way back up.
3) He works hard, but doesn't play much. This is the man
I respect most. The athlete behind the scenes. The athlete
that is good enough but needs a good break. There are
numerous guys that are in this position. These are the stars
of tomorrow as they keep that desire to succeed. The
shade is one of expectancy to bloom and grow into brilliance.
4) The last shade is that of a senior who has finished
his last game. It's all over, the memories...all the good and
bad... the pains and pleasures... what now? You reach the
point where you find the reality of like looking you right
between the eyes. The bright lights of athletics are changed
into the dim lights of real life. School becomes the most
important factor in yoIr life. The brilliance of past shades .
slowly fades away and you become just another blade of
grass.
"The grass is greener on the other side." As life continues,
we find out that there's no other side.. .just different shades.
As we continue our college days, remember, green grass
results from hard work and team respect. Our team of stu
dents, athletes, teachers, and administrators can win, if and
when we get knocked down, we help each other up.
