However, Atlee Prince, president of the Afro American association, said the cheerleading squad had been "discrimatory" in the selection processes. Prince said that last year a black woman had tried out for the squad. Cynthia McLeod had been on the For Regional Car Brunton Support .BY BUNNY SMITH Gamecock Star Writer State support for the regional campuses of USC is "signifi cantly lower" than support given to the main campus. H. Willard Davis, Vice-Provost of Regional Campuses, said this was the "big difference" between regional campuses and the main campus. The regional campuses are subsidized $600 for each full time equivalent student. The main receives $1200 for their full-time equivalent students. Dean Harold Brunton said a proposal had been introduced to the House Ways and Means Committee about three weeks ago which would increase the support for regional campuses from $600 to $800. Brunton said the House Ways and Means Committee would bring the rec comendation to the floor of the House of Representatives. Brunton and Davis said that "locals" furnish the facilities for the regional campuses. USC, using student fees and t he $600 takes care of academic operations. Brunton said a "ceiling" on local contributions dlid exist. He said a great advan tage was in the local support, and the state should not take over but supplement the local supnport. Prince said McLeod thought that this was "dis crimination by the selection committee." Prince said this was dis criminatio,, because the squad first should be chosen and then style adjustments could be made. Prince said the matter was taken before the Minority Affairs Committee and Bryant Wright and the Stu dent Government were con tacted about the affair. Bryant Wright, according to Prince, came before the Afro-American association to explain the new judging system that was going into effect. The new judging system, Wright said, is a panel com posed of two representa tives from a national cheer leading organization, two former USC cheerleaders who have graduated, one band member, one student senator and the dean of minority affairs or a rep resentative from his office. Charles L. McMillian, dean of minority affairs said npuses : State Lower Brunton said three alterna ti ves in addition to getting more state support existed. 1. Use parts of the fees for payment of existing bond issues. 2. Reduce student fees. 3. Spend more on educational programs. The additional $200 received from the state would enable the universit y to do one of the three above things. Brunton pointed out that the university could do none of this "without additional state support."
