Seven Organ $22,400 In / The Student Allocations Com mittee met in Russell House Thursday to act on budget increase requests from seven student organizations. After the three-hour session was over, $22,400 had been dis tributed by the committee com prised of eight students, a sec retary and two non-voting faculty advisors. The committee which is responsible for the administra tion of %2-million in student activity funds had met with six of the seven groups the week before to hear requests for funds over and above those allocated last spring for this school year. The first organization to receive funds was the USC Sai ling Club which had requested almost $5,000 last week for four new competitive sailboats. According to the sailing club spokesman, that group's newest boat is five years old and the other three average seven years. The committee gave the group $2,700 for the purchase of two new boats. Scotts Derks, chairman of the committee, said the reasoning of the com mittee was to add this money to $918 that the club had been saving from allocations of the previous two years and thus allow the club to purchase at least two or three boats. Derks said that when these six groups had originally come before the committee two weeks ago, the allocations board had been anticipating around $40,000 in surplus funds to distribute among these groups, but, Derks added, the Benedict College Sponsers Movie Ticket's for "The Man," the movie about a black man who acCi dentally slipped into the Presidency of the United States, are being sold by the Benedict College Junior and Senior Alumni Associations. "The Man," starring James Earl Jones and an all star cast, begins March 1, at the Gamecock Theater in the Parkland Shopping Center. The alumni group is selling advance tickets from which the proceeds will go to their Second Centennial Project. Only tickets bought before March 1, will go to the school. An alumni spokesman said this is "an opportunity to help our school give for something in return," anid he noted the financial problems most black colleges are now experiencing. Tickets are on sale at Benedict, Taylor Street Pharmacy and the Fountain Bleau Inn. O _ izations Get kilocations ,final figure came to about half that. Next to ask for money was the University Union on behalf of Bell Camp, the university resort camp about 1S miles east of Columbia. The union origi nally asked for $21,680 for capi tal improvements of the camp, but having been told by the board that the original amoung of money was not forth coming, they reduced their request to $14,130. The Afro allocation was finally set at $1,100 which woild allow the organization to sponser and attend three conferences plus funds for office supplies and intramural activites. Other clubs receiving funds were the Sport Parachute Club $1,000, Women Intercollegiate Athletic Association-$700, USC Cycling Club--$700 and Women in Law-$2,000. Women in Law received a substantial allocation to sponser a Women in Law Con ference which will include uni versities across the country. The Gamecock builds strong bodies in twelve ways!
