BIG STAR
No. 1 Record
Ardent ADS-2803
This group has produced a
record here that could turn into
this year's version of "Sittin'
In," the smash sleeper of last
year.
The group is out of Memphis
and perhaps the only one you
have ever heard of in the group
is a fellow by the name of Alex
Chilton.
Not familiar? How quickly we
forget. Alex was that raspy
throated dude who wailed out
"The Letter" among others for
a group called the Box Tops not
too awfully long ago.
Well, the Box Tops have gone
away, redeemed so that Dick
Clark can have his very own

Somewhere along the line
Alex cleared his throat and the
sandpaper in his voice went
away, presumably with the Box
Tops to Battle Creek.
How to describe the Big Star?
Well, it's kind of hard because
there are so many styles at work
here you can dredge up influ
ences from Led Zeppelin, the
Stones, the Moody Blues, the
Pink Floyd, the Byrds, the Hol
lies, the Cufflinks (no kidding)
and of course the Beatles on
individual cuts. When you get
the record you can find your
own influences.
But, the point beyond the
point that one of these guys (I'm
not sure who) can doing a bang
up Robert Plant imitation is that
it doesn't matter. Not a bit. You
didn't fault Help Yourself for
sounding like the Springfield

But even these are bad exam
ples. Because with all this
varied styling carrying-on, you
like. It's the first record I've
gotten hold of recently that I
could actually stand to listen to
all the way through, both sides,
without skipping a cut. A minor
miracle in itself.
And its happy music. I'm very
tired of everybody trying to be
as evil as the Stones. What it
does for me is dredge up 1965,
the Beatles and trying to get the
family car.
Reactionary hogwash and
David Bowie owns the world.
Yeah, I know, I read the papers,
but still, there ought to be room
for uncomplicated rock and
roll, something that doesn't

before it is acceptable.
Someone said in a recent arti
cle about the Raspberries some
thing to the effect that there is
very little music that is pro
duced to sound good on a car
radio and that most teenagers
today are more worried about
getting laid than about the
energy crisis or Mr. Nixon's
subversion of democracy.
Take a song on AM right now.
"Rocky Mountain High" for
instance. The dude in that song
is 27 years old and his big hang
up is worrying about the seren
ity of clear mountain lakes.
"Killing Me Softly With His
Song" the main character in
that song is a jaded lady who
came to a concert or nightclub
because she heard this guy was
different; he might amuse her.
None of these songs talk
about people having fun or any
thing. Now this may seem pre
tty far afield, but when was the
last time you heard a song that
simply made you happy without
trying to solve the world's prob
lems, that is without socially
redeeming qualities? When was
the last time you heard a song
on the old car radio that made
you jump and want to turn up
the volume real loud?
Yeah, yeah, I know, you're all
sophisticated-up and can't be
boothered with that. But if you

Big Star isn't like that. I put
it on and let ride. I didn't busy
myself with perusing the cover
or seeing the name of the cut
that was playing at that instant.
I was too busy enjoying the
music.
And its very simple, one side
rocks, the other side is dreamy
and nobody get shortchanged
because there are six on each
side.
So no matter what your musi
cal taste, for an easy to take
record that'll make you smile,
try Big Star.
