'The Birds Are Dead' By GEORGE GEIGER, Sr. Special To The Gamecock Editor's Note: The following article was written during the recent snowstorm which immobilized the drinking birds in front of Humanities. The large beautiful white birds who constantly drank water in the reflecting pool at the University of South Carolina's Humanities Building are dead. In the past the three birds were usually seen merrily bobbng up and down in the clear water, having a fine time disclaying their plumage to admiring university students. The birds were captured for the University by a local artist for the nominal sum of $10,000. At first the birds were happy in their new home, merrily bobbing and drinking as an orchestrated trio. There was a big bird who set the pace, in the middle, flanked by two smaller birds. The small birds seemed to patiently wait until the big bird got his drink, then they bobbed in turn. This went merrily on for a year or so, then one day one of the smaller birds just stopped drinking. It just stood on one leg and watched the other two drink. In time the other small bird began to pitch and reel while it drank. It was soon apparent it had a broken leg. The bird in the middle continued to drink the now dark water and one day it too stopped drinking. But one could see that it too was dying, its beak all black from the dirty water. So now this trio of once proud white birds stand in the water of the pool. One died fast, one had a broken leg and now has a broken neck. The one in the middle is finished spitting black water from his beak, for he too is dead. P ONENA Student Night TUESDAY 5 P.M.
