SATURDAY - FEB. 24 7:00 & 10:00 Russell House Theatre 754 Tennis Gamecocks open season Carolina's tennis team, after a surprisingly swift return to respec tability last season under first-year coach Ron Smarr, opens its 1973 season at Georgia Southern Feb. 24 with high hopes for continuing those winning ways. Smarr, whose first Gamecock squad posted a fine 22-4 record last year, has almost all his top perfor mers back and feels this team may be stronger overall than last year's, but considers the opener with Geor gia Southern "a real challenge." "They should be strong," said Smarr, whose teams at USC and Wingate have compiled a 122-18-1 dual match record in five years, "since they have several good new comers, including one nationally ranked junior player. It should be a real good test to start our season, but if the tremendous attitude our squad has shown so far is any indi cation, we should have a fine year." Although he feels his playing order may change somewhat later., in the season, Smarr plans to have junior Brian Desatnik from Johan nesburg, South Africa, playing the number one spot in the lineup against the Eagles. Currently doing battle for the number two position are Jeff Kefalos, an impressive freshman from Parkersburg, W. Va., and senior captain Kevin McCarthy of Teaneck, N. J., who Smarr feels is just beginning to play well after starring at the number one spot for USC last season. The Gamecocks suffered a blow last week when Tim Marks was sidelined with a knee injury and possibly lost for the season. The Miami, Fla. senior was playing number four singles and on the number one doubles team when injured and his loss will be felt espe cially in doubles, as well as lessen ing the squad's experience and singles depth. Currently, junior Tom Craig of Roanoke, Va., freshman Andreas Hufschmid from Geneva, Switzer land, senior "Doc" Malloy of Lynchburg, Va. and Homestead, Fla. senior Tom Collins are lOolding down the next four positions in that order. But Smarr admitted that their order could change and that Mark Rosenblum, a Fairlawn, N. J. sophomore and junior Paul Adler from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., are threats to break into the lineup. After the opener with the Eagles, the Gamecocks start a ten-match home stand on March 3 against NCAA College Division favorite Hampton Institute, then on March S take on in-state rival Pres byterian, a power in NAIA tennis circles and one of the four teams to decision USC last year. Following that match, Smarr's squad faces Appalachian State, Purdue, Duke, Central Michigan Swarthmore, Western Kentucky twice and East Tennessee State, all at home, before their next road test against Furman on March 17.
