Hope's Histor StaturE BY HARRY HOPE (Monday we traced the develop ment of a green hill and a gold ball into the bustling South Carolina Col lege, and the college's downfall in the Great War. Today we begin in 1876. The names have remained the same to condemn the guilty.) CHAPTER III And then did Wade Hampton look out upon the land and behold the misery of his people. "Verily, I must get into power and put the slaves back into their place. I will laugh them with scorn. The carpetbaggers I will beat with a rod of iron and have them in derision." And Wade Hampton did go forth and build the Hotel Wade Hampton. And he did ride out unto the land and was the solution to the siery of the people. The people did rise up and throw off the Yoke of the To The Editor: In reference to the very con troversial issue of Equal Rights, I would like to make this comment. After all the debate, pro and con, very little will be solved. Those per sons avidly for the amendment and those persons avidly against it, will not have changed their minds. However, those persons whose opinions could be changed might ask the following question. Why must ERA advocates spend millions of dollars on a nationwide promotion of the amendment, which they claim will lead to a just restruc turing of home, marriage and occu pations to avoid society imposed masculine and feminine role play ing? If the amendment is so just, why the million dollar sales pitch? A good product always sells itself! Regardless of all the talking and all the opinions passed, the ERA will in all probability be ratified. Can you imagine:David Spinazzolo, five years from now, sitting in his den, watching "Days of Our Lives," sipp in g his se venth cup of cof fee, occa sionally checking on the baby in the nursery, and fondly reminiscing of the good old days when ERA stood for a baseball pitching statistic Earned Run Average? TIerry Murphy To The Editor: I allegedly smoke marijuana allegedly so do the vast majority of students here at USC. Why do 1 proclaim this in a public letter? Because I was arrested for just thai not too long ago and that fact is nov a matter of public record. I am nol unique, thousands every year are arrested for the possession and sale of marijuana. If you have been lis tening and reading the local mediL in the past few weeks you know tha drug related arrests in Richlanc County have been increased tw< fold during the month of February in the last two weeks the Narcotic Division of the City Police an< SLED have arrested nearly 5 individuals for abuse or neglect o: the current drug laws. I am one o thos..e 50. I have been arrested, hand '.ed, fingerprinted, photo ef~,''d, Iocked up in a 3 x 6 foo .- ur -o;rvinnr enlaon$7rmO~ln y of The Univi Y Gaine Oppressors, which they intended to put on the blacks. And the land was saved by Ham pton I. It was about this time that South Carolina College did become the University of South Carolina. The elders gathered together and said, one to another, "It is meet that we start an Athletic Department." For they were short of sight and knew not what they did. The University did prosper and grow and gained stature with God and men. And the rich rolled in their money, and the poor rolled in and worked as janitors. Then did the scribes and pharisees say to each other; "We will make men who cannot only con jugate verbs, but who can build bridges and become doctors and lawyers and scientists and preachers and teachers and kings and queens and they will lead the .................- Le bond; for what? smoking and pos sessing marijuana. It was to the surprise of the police that I had no warts, crippled limbs, mental illness and other assorted maladies that are alleged to accompany the regular use of marijuana. If I may I'd like to sug gest that the Columbia Pblice begin using intelligent beings on the Nar cotics Squad instead of the illiterate and uninformed individuals pre sently being used. After all it can only be an uneducated man who feels that by arresting me that he is preventing "little children in the ghetto from developing habits." For some of you this may be hard to believe yet this is the response I got when I asked one of the agents why he was arresting me. I asked him if he believed in what he was doing to countless individuals like myself and his reply was "yes." He just hated to see people "fucked up" by marijuana. My life is not f--ked up by marijuana, it is f--ked up by the ridiculous laws now pertainingto its use. My life is f-ked up because I now have criminal record for some thing for which I have no criminal guilt. I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent being (although I realize this is subject to debate) who will someday be a productive member of this society. I will have com pleted 3 years of college this spring and will more than likely have a GPR somewhere close to a 3.0. Ii the past I have never had difficulty finding and holding a job and I air not in debt to anyone. Now, mucd of this is subject to change and the potential consequences could have been devastating. Because of a U S( policy I have been requested to vac ate the housing provided to me b) the University. This is due to the charge against me claiming that "deal" or "push" marijuana. I an not at liberty to discuss why, bu this charge is utterly false andi part of the power structure pathological fear of certai individuals they believe to be .threat to their positions of self proc s laimed God-like power. Though m3 I case is relatively insignificant it i [) none-the-less an example of thi; abuse of power. Although a basic principle o - American law is that an individu& is innocent until proven guilty, thi University seems to believe thati ) is their right to igore this tene - opinions - rsity d With( South back to where it once was." And the students learned and asked no questions. They did not inscribe bathroom walls, neither did they commit any foul manner of deed. And they went out into the world to enact Jim Crow laws. Some became statesmen. Some became drunkards and brawlers in the street. Some went awhoring after golden idols. They were all great men, for they went out into the world to keep the nigra in his place. CHAPTER IV And it was in the reign of Tillman, called "Pitchfork Ben ," governor of Southern Carolina, that men caused to be built a place called Clemson. And there was much strife and contention, and verily, it con tinues even to this day. And the century did turn, but ters to Ec I have been given until Mar. 1 to vacate unless the charges against me are dropped by then. If this is followed through I may have no other choice but to leave school. As I understand it if I had been a resi dent of S. C. at the time of my enroll ment 3 years ago this rule would not apply to me. Why? Because it is the belief of the President of this institution that drugs are present on this campus because northern stu dents such as myself have brought them here. His arguement is based on statis tics that show the greatest percen tage of those arrested for drug related offenses are from the north. This arguement is easily dismissed when you consider the cultural lag between the two regions. It might be a good idea to remember that the alcoholic rate in this state is among the highest and that the use of alcoholic beverages by students predominately from this state is appalling. I realize that much of this is relative but I can not help but be appalled by the fact that a man intrusted with the well-being of so many people can have such a nar row minded view. Due to the serious nature of the charges against me it is a possiblit) that I could serve a prison term Besides wasting valuable time tha1 could be productively spent some. where else I would be caged in a dilapadated prison with individualk whose crimes are much more seri ous than mine. I would be subjec to violence and an unlimited supply of hard drugs. I would bi impr isoned for the use of mar ijuanm and potentially I might be release< a violent lawbreaking junkie. Iron: cally prison conditions in this coun try are so deplorable many inmate Ifeel drugs are their only hope fo sanity. The sad fact is that there ar< miriads of individuals like mysel who are in the same situation. Cum rently I have a good friend whoi i sitting in jail this very moment an will more than likely be there fo .awhile. What kind of individual wi he be upon his release? Before hi simprisonment his only crime wa sdrug use. No doubt there are som of you who feel my friend is ill bL f by cagin g him up like an animal ha LIsociety rehabilitated him? H-as soc e ety protected itself from furthe t danger? He may emerge frot p rison a hardened criminal wh 3od an nobody at Carolina turned for twenty years. Then it is recorded by the scor cerers and scribes that a strange disease did fall upon the men and women of Carolina. They did go out into the city, and did put on strange garments: raccoon coats, short dresses. They did grease back their hair and did shout the phrases of the devil: "Twenty-three skidoo;" "The cat's pajamas." Selah. And the old men did pull their hair and rent their garments and cry aloud "What the hell is going on?" (Soundeth familiar, doth it not?) Then the wisest of them all arose and addressed the elders, and did say "Boys will be boys." And one of the elders asked the wise man; "What saith thee about women?" And the elder replied, "Yea, ver ily, hear my words, for they are the words of the Lord. Let each woman be bound unto her own room. Let feels he has little stake in confor mity. He may find it next to impossi ble to find a good job. What is his only alternative but crime? The really sad fact is that the big gest majority of those arrested in this lattest crackdown were arrested for possession or sale of marijuana. The money and time spent to arrest marijuana offenders could well be spent rehabilitating those who really need it. Contrary to what the Columbia Police think, arresting me will not prevent chil dren in the .ghetto from contacting more serious drug problems, it will only worsen things. I'm not really sure what the solu tion is, or who has the power and will to change these gross injustives but I've heard it rumored that it is supposed to be us. ' The war did come and go, and one of the wars stayed. The Men of Carolina did march off into foreign lands singing the Carolina Alma Mater. And the blood of the dead and dying did seep into the gound and sterilize the soil. Not only that but the legal and justice systems in this country are becoming corrupt tools in the hands of a few who really do not care if their demeanor creates respect or not.
