Rugger
Duke,

The USC Rugby Club won their
27th straight home contest and
brought their record on the season
to 3-0 by defeating a very physical
team from Duke University 22-0
Sunday afternoon.
Nat Ewell one of the player
coaches of the rugby team said of
the roughness of the game, "The
game was very rough because Duke
had three varsity football players
playing for their squad. When this
happens the game usually turns into
a slug-fest as it did today. The
reason for this is that the football
players don't understand the game
and they are surprised by the rough
ness of the game and they
retaliate."
Carolina had trouble getting on
the board at the beginning of the
game as Duke showed a strong
defense in the opening ten minutes.
The Blue Devils had two crucial
goal-line stands in the first ten
minutes of play.
Jack Amy broke the ice for the
Carolina club as he scored on a
twenty-yard run. The two-point
conversion was wide and Carolina
led 4-0.
Jim Wynn was next to tally for
the Gamecocks. Burke Hayes made
a beautiful pass back to Wynn with
three men on him and Wynn srAm

pered in untouched, catching the
opposition completely out of posi
tion. Warren Muir added the two
point conversion and the whistle
sounded ending the half. Carolina
led by the score of 10-0.
Amy scored again for the second
time of the day and this time the
score came in an unusual way for
the Carolina team. Amy placed a
twenty-yard drop kick through the
uprights for the three points. This
was only the second drop kick con
verted in the history of Carolina
rugby.
Warner Minshall scored the next
try for the Carolina ruggers after
Jim Elder got him into the open with
an excellent lateral pass. Muir
again added the conversion after
the score.
Nest, Muir vaulted into the fam
ous few who have scored on drop
kicks at Carolina as he too put the
ball between the goal posts for a
three-point score. This last score
ended the game as the ruggers
registered another shutout, 22-0.
Player-coach Ewell commented
on next weeks crucial game with NC
State after the game , "We have
been looking forward to this game
ever since the controversial loss
last season. To say the least it is
a grudge match. The game will
be played next Saturday at two o'c
lock on Intramural Field B.

choose to employ strategy rather than just send their out
classed squads onto the court to run themselves ragged
to defeat.
But for those who hate the idea of winning in such a
fashion, they can be assured that the stall is rare and many
more teams play a running offense, than do a slow, deliber
ate type.
It seems a foolish venture to employ sich rule changes
to prevent the remote possibility of things that are unlikely
to happen, especially when the rule changes are so poten
tially dangerous to the complete game of basketball.
The colleges now enjoy a national following in the sport
of basketball that is at least equal to, or more than, that
of their professional counterparts. Can college football or
college baseball, two sports that play by almost identical
standards to the pros, make the same claims?
Still it seems as if the colleges are headed in the direction
of adapting a clock, and sometime soon thereafter outlawing
the zone. And that direction seems to be a poor one to head
into; the game is good now, leave it as it is.
