USC Win te rs sparkle I BY JI Asst. Si Less than five minutes Carolina basketball game Winters and Danny Trayloi went on a 13-minute, 24-po to their 17th win of the se 20th straight win at the Co The visitors from Philadelphi were only behind 7-6 until Winter hit 16 points and Traylor eight i that 13-minute span. When Alexai der English, who had 17 rebound: 14 points in the game, scored t break USC's Traylor-Winters; sti ing the Wildcats were behind 33-1 and for all practical purposes wer out of the game. For Villanova, who is an amal ingly unbalanced team, the loss wa their 11th of the season and nint in the last 10 games. Their seaso has been all downhill since their los to Carolina in the Holiday Festiva They were 6-0 before meeting th Gamecocks in New York and are 4 11 since that game. The Wildcats relied heavily on 6 guard Tom Ingelsby to carry then and, although he had a great gam with 31 points, it was not nearl enough to derail the more-balance Gamecocks. Carolina's fiv starters--English, Winters, Traylo Mike Dunleavy and Kevin Joyc( -combined for 74 of the 7 Gamecocks points. Traylot', whose game ha improved greatly since the earl part of the season, was encourage by his 18 points. "The first part c the year," Traylor said after th game, "I would have mental lapse5 I always had the talent but now know when and how to use it. "I'm scoring better now," th seven-footer continued, "and th rest of the guys can afford to pla a little looser." Joyce went the first half wit only two points, that coming on buzzer-beater at the end of the hal but his playmaking set up sever Winters and Traylor baskets, and I had five assists in the first 2 minutes. "He's amazing," Traylor con mented about Joyce after the gain "He's so unselfish. He doesn't nec to score to have a great game ar his attitude catches on to everyor else." Joyce said he was pleased wit the way the Gamecocks moved th ball against the man-to-man Vi lanova defense. "We were movin the ball real good," USC's Al America hopeful commented. "Ou movement without the ball wa great. Right now we're moving th ball better than at any time thi year. But it could get better," h added, soundin g muc h like a per fe< tionist. Saturday's game was the fouri in two years between the tva schools and also the fourth betwee great guards, Joyce and Ingelsb However, the Carolina guard sai that he didn't feel he was competin directly against Ingelsby. "I'm not in a battle with him. Joyce, who scored 16 points an handed out seven assists, sai philosophically, "we're in a batti with them." routts \ , Traylor n first half M HERSH Ports Editor had gone by in the Villanova aturday afternoon when Brian took over the USC offense and int tear to send the Gamecocks ason, seventh straight win and liseum, 77-53. a It is evident that Joyce and Ingel s sby have two distinctly different n jobs to do, and both do their's well. i- Ingelsby is forced to be the scorer , for an otherwise impotent Villanova o team while Joyce acts as the police man of the USC attack, directing the 8 cohesive Gamecock offense. e Now playing their best basketball of the season, the Gamecocks are hoping to receive a bid to the NCAA s play-offs, and the decisive victory over Villanova did not hurt their chances at all. s "If we win 20 games," freshman guard Dunleavy said, "there is no way we shouldn't go to the Region als." With four games left in the regular season, three at home, Carolina should get to the 20-game mark. 3 However, with St. John's and , Providence almost assured of bids, e Carolina will probably have to be y picked over Virginia Tech, a team d they lost to earlier in the season. e "They would have to take into r, consideration our schedule," Dun leavy said, indicating that Carolina 7 plays a much tougher schedule than than the Gobblers. Captain Joyce said; "They could s move us to another region," thus y getting both the Gamecocks d playoffs and VPI into the play-offs f "but I'lll let them worry about that." e "The way we're playing right . now," Joyce added, "we deserve a I bid." After seeing the Gamecocks run Villanova out of the Coliseum Satur e day afternoon it's hard to argue with e him about that. y h a f, 1l e g r S e d Hot V g Brian Winters, who scored "overall, in Saturday's USC-V d field goal despite pressure fr0 d Winters' first half hot streak C on thi 77... thahn of. th illanova ( e4 To the I Playmaker Kevin Joyce lobs a pass into the pivot to seven-foot Danny Traylor in Saturday afternoon's Gamecock win over Villanova.
