Access to the media is one of the most critical needs of the gay com munity at this time and articulate, well-informed spokesmen another. The media represents one of the most vital vehicles for the homosexual community to state its ccse. As a spokesman for the gay population, some of "Mike's" statements must be considered a gross misuse of his position and an example of the poverty or ar ticulation and leadership within the gay community at this time. To state that "there's no place in Columbia where gays can get together for 'drag parties' and entertainment" as one of the pressing problems of gay activism is both a distortion of priorities and a criminal misrepresentation of the facts to an uninformed public. The fact is that a dirth of en tertainment is not a pressing problem for gay people (there are, I believe, some four or five gay or mixed bars in Columbia.. Also, to represent gay aspirations as wanting to "go in drag" is to ignore the fact that transvestitism is not a homosexual phenomenon and that only some five per cent of gay males ever go "in drag." I also find very interesting your editorial emphasis in putting this statement as a bold-type "Blurb." Perhaps this represents some form of emphasis distortion on your part also? In view of the problems facing the gay community such as "en trapment," criminal legislation, harassment by police, ineligibility for bonding and government employment, and theological and psychoanalytic condemnation, I find Mike's statements at best uninformed and your editorial prejudices, perhaps, uncriticized.
