Joyce returned to the game after missing the first eight minutes of the second period and his clutch shooting and ball-handling proved to be the decisive factor in the Carolina victory. The 6-3, All America candidate removed himself from the game 12 seconds prior to halftime complaining of stomach nausea. Although USC held a six-point intermission lead, 38-32, when Joyce left the game, Toledo soon closed the gap and eventually gained the lead for the first time at 56-54. Joyce returned to the lineup and teammate Brian Winters began hitting consistently and the Gamecocks were able to remain in a close battle with the home Toledo team throughout the final minutes. The game was tied for the final time at 66-66, but Winters and Joyce responded with long jumpshots which propelled the visitors ahead to stay. USC was able to take a five-point margin during the final half minute of play when Joyce flipped a behind-the-head pass to Danny Traylor who layed it in for an easy basket. Toledo scored again on a tap-in by Tom Kozelko but the game was effectively decided when Carolina claimed that commanding five-point lead.
