In a problem and suggestion survey conducted by the USC. Student Senate Off-Campus Student Affairs Committee, more than 400 students expres sed concern in this field. 11 S 'ti 1 "' I V - The survey, held primarily during spring semester regist ration, indicated three major areas of concern. Finding a parking space was felt by most students to be the major prob lem for commuters.. The next most often heard complaint was the lack of communication between the administration and the students who did not receive information through their dorms. The third largest com plaint was the relatively small involvement of off-campus stu dents in University activities. As well as complaining about the problems, many students also offered possible solutions. Concerning the parking situa tion, the most frequent sugges tion was the addition of more shuttle buses to acommodate the students parking in the out lying campus areas, like the Coliseum. Others suggested, obtaining meters with longer parking hours and converting the Horseshoe into a parking lot. Dealing with the problem of communications between com muters and the administration, many students suggested that mailing the Gamecock or notices of events to home addresses might help. Several students also wanted the Gamecock dispersed at places other than the Russell House. Still others wanted a special newspaper or newsletter designed especially for off campus students to be dis tributed once each week. Concerning the problem of involvement of off-campus stu dents in University affairs, the most frequent solution was to have more activities offered or geared to these students, such as offering movies in the after noons, rather than only at night. Other more specific sugges tions were to give commuters more of a chance to participate in intramurals and to provide a commuter lounge and study room. Some requested special planned events strictly for off campus students and activities for young married couples with families. General suggestions made in reply to the survey included keeping longer library hours, putting wall lockers on campus for books and materials and creating new overnight bicycle parking lots for students who do not wish to transport their bicy cles every day. Some students also had some specific gripes. Some think the administration is not receptive to the needs of coummuters, classes are too large, advise ment forms were mailed late, and students are denied equal opportunity to enroll in courses at registration. Others said commuters need stronger representation in stu dent government, stronger off campus government, more involvement in the planning of buildings and the planning of curriculum, and more pul$icity about yearbooks, fraternities and sororities.
