Ruggers open
in Charleston

The USC Rugby Club, after a very impressive fall season
of 8-1, will be opening their Spring season with an exhibition
game against a team from the British Frigate HMS Bulwark
which is docked in Charleston. The game will be played
in Charleston on February 4th.
One of the player-coaches of the rugby team, Dr. Jim
Wynn said of the game on Sunday, "It will provide great
experience for our rugby team to play this group of Navy
men from England. These men have been brought up on
rugby as a sport since they were very little and by just
playing against them we should learn a lot.
"In England you can compare the rugby system with how
a young man is brought up playing Little League
baseball in the United States.
On the season as a whole Dr. Wynn said, "There are two
things the rugby club whill be looking forward to this sea
son, first that we are invited to the National Collegiate
Rugby Tournament, and second our return match (at home)
with N. C. State.
On the first objective, any team that participates in the
sport of rugby in the United States on the collegiate level
hopes they will be invited to the tournament. Carolina feels
their chances of being invited are very good, as they were
invited last spring and also they were ranked as the top
team in the southeast. Also the selection committee bases
part of its decision on the winter season record. Carolina
by all means had an excellent Fall season record.
The second topic of discussion is possibly the most inter
esting to any of Carolina's avid rugby fans. This concerns
the home game against N.C. State. For the people who didn't
follow the Rugby team last season, N. C. State supplied
the only blemish on Carolina's winter season record in a
rather controversial game that was played at State.
As Dr. Wynn said with a grin "We will be more than
ready for State when they come to Carolina on the 24th
of February."
The Rugby Club will be playing their first official game
of the season on the 11th of this month at the University
a of Georgia.
The first home game will be the week following as the
. Ruggers will be taking Duke, as the team will be going
for their 26th straight win at home.
