ChinesE SUSAN PAQUET Staff Writer Chinese students are bringing to the University and the Columbia area a taste of Chinese tradition this week with their celebration of the Lunar New Year, the most colorful of China's festivals. Peter Chow is president of the Chinese Student's Association, which has spent much time and money organizing "Chinese Week,". Chow and his friend Jason Wu both expressed the hope that the programs prepared will help foster more understanding between American students and visiting stu dents from China. Both Chow and Wu are from Taiwan and studied together in Peking before meeting again here at Carolina. "The big problem for the Chinese student is in the language," Chow said. Wu added that, "the Chinese student is shy to speak" to his American contemporaries because of the lack of confidence he has in his English speaking ability. Another problem the foreign stu dent faces is with the American food. On top of being so far from their homes they have to conform to a new culture and different food. This combination takes time to adjust to. Chow said the student often gets ill after arriving here. For these reasons Chow said the Chinese stu dents "form their own separate communities" where they prepare Chinese foods and remain conserva tive and out of sight. Another prob lem is the high cost of food here in the United States. The same foods of ten cost five or ten times as much here as in Taiwan. The approaches to religion for the students from China are as diver sified as they are for American stu dents. There are Buddhists, Catholics and Protestants and most practice their religion on their own. Both Wu and Chow praised a house program which a Columbia Baptist church has organized for foreign students. In this program a family invites these students into their homes for a meal and friendship. Wu praised the proverbial "southern hospital ity" by stating "this is something unique here."Chow added this has been extremely helpful to the stu dents who otherwise feel they were receiving the "cold shoulder" treat ment. Wu expressed this same belief. The food which was prepared by the students them selves for Saturday night's Chinese banquet was a new experience for most. "The young people don't pay much attention to how their mother prepares food," Wu said. Food is one of the most important aspects of the Chinese new year festival. The Golden Lion was ordered from Taiwan at a cost of $250. It is the only authentic Golden Lion outside of the Chinatowns in New York and San Francisco.
