Sports Editor - Competing in its first track meet of the season Saturday, Carolina was overwhelmed by Tennessee and Southern Illinois on the Volun teer's indoor track. Tennessee amassed 72 points, easily outdistancing the Salukies, 49, and Carolina, 20, for the victory. USC coach Bill McClure, who pre dicted before the meet that Tennes see and Southern Illinois would be too strong for his Gamecocks, said he was satisfied with his team's per formance. "We did about as well as we expected," said McClure yesterday. "Tennessee has gone through six meets already this year, and South ern Illinois was in its fourth meet. With the little experience that we have had indoors, we felt as though we did pretty well." The only winner for Carolina was senior hurdler Bill Novo. Novo won the 60-yd. hurdles in 7.5. However, ten other USC track men placed in the meet, a source of satisfaction for McClure. "We placed in just about every event," McClure said, "and there were a couple other events, like the mile, where we just missed getting a place." In the mile, Wayne Thomas ran 4:16.8, not good enough to place in the meet, but the time was close to Kessleri, BY MARK LEARY Sports Writer USC's Swim team swept 10 of the 13 events, and set ten new meet records as they trounced Morehouse College of Atlanta 91-21, Saturday at the Gamecock's Swimm ing Pool. Carolina's deluge of Morehouse was lead by Nick Kesslering, who was voted by his teammates Gamecock of the meet. Kesslering set a meet record in winning the 500 yard freestyle, and had a hand in setting two other records as he swam a leg in both relay events, the 400-yard medley relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay. From the first event Carolina started to pull away from outclas sed Morehouse. Bob Warner, James Chellis,Nick Kesslering and Glen Spears swam to a meet record in the 400-yard medley relay. Mike Hiller was next to take a first place as he swam to an easy victory in the 1000-yard freestyle. Chip Newman, who swam to two first place finishes last week, con tinued to be impressive as he set a new meet record in the 200-yard freestyle. Morehouse won their only event of the meet as Andrew Brown, who won the same event last year, repeated this year with a con vincing victory over John Poole, who finished second for the Free Dr To ladies eve -,all Mamas Pump 215 Pickeri Happy Hour 1 am overr his personal best for either indoor or outdoors. The Gamecocks also got a good performance out of their short sprinters. Milt Reid and Jim Small were second and third in the 60-yard dash. Both were timed in 6.4, and McClure showed no surprise from the shnwings by his sprinters. A USC freshman came through' with one of the most encouraging performances, according to McClure. "I was very pleased with Ron Adams," McClure said of the high jumper who placed-fourth at 6-7. "The school record is 6-7% and Ron just missed 6-9." Carolina's inexperienced freshman tracksters produced five places. John Brown, Randy Hall, 7g stars I Gamecocks. David Briggs captures first place in the 200 yard individual medley as two Morehouse men took second and third. The Gamecocks, through the next eight events, captured eight new meet records. In one-meter diving James Tingen took first with a meet record, and Howard Watts took sec ond. It was just the opposite in the three-meter diving, as Watts took first with a new meet record, and Tingen took second. "The young kids performed well," said McClure, indicating that he was happy with their debuts, "and so, for that matter, did the guys with experience." Now that the first indoor meet is over, McClure is looking for better things in the Gamecocks next meet, Saturday at North Carolina with Clemson and UNC. "We're about where we expected to be as far as our training is con cerned," McClure said. "We're look ing forward to Clemson and North Carolina, and I think that they will be more in our class than Tennessee and Southern Illinois." B asketball USC vs. Marshall Jan. 31 or USC breaststroke. Finally the swim team closed out the meet the same way they started as they won another relay event and set a meet record. It was the team of John Poole, Glen Spears, Bob Warner and Nick Kesslering that broke the final record of the meet. The team goes on a long road trip which will take them to the Univer sity of Georgia, University of South Florida, University of Miami and finally back to Clemson on Feb. 5.
