President Thomas F. Jones addresses Student Senate
Job hunting season
now officially open
BY SUSAN PAQUET
Staff Writer
The University Placement Office is presently handling
interviews between prospective graduates and representa
tives of nationwide companies.
This service which is free to students of USC is headed
by Mr. Frank W. Johnson. Johnson feels that "The oppor
tunities are better now than they ever have been."
The recruiting season is in progress and will continue
through the middle of April with major companies such
as Goodyear, Texaco, Bell System, and General Electric.
The Placement Bureau provides the facilities for inter
views and keeps files and resumes on hand for each
interested student for up to eight years after graduation.
Therefore, alumni can also take advantage of this service.
"The experience of looking for a job is very good for a
student," Johnson stated.
Assisting graduates in finding suitable employment is the
major function of the Placement Bureau. The service also
provides aid in having resumes printed and a Placement
Library which has career information about different com
panies. The bureau also aids freshmen, sophomores, and
juniors in designing a program of study suitable to their
career ambitions.
The bureau, located in Leiber College on the horseshoe,
has a bulletin board which displays job opportunities which
otherwise would remain unknown to most students. Most
of these jobs are with local firms.

USC President Thomas F.
Jones asked the Student Senate
Wednesday night to work with
"faculty, administration, board
of trustees and their student
constituency through confer
ences, hearings or whatever is
required to get legislation that
is realistic and effective."
"It can be done and should be
done, but when a body creates
Mickey Mouse legislation the
reaction has to be Mickey
Mouse" the President said.
President Jones asked the
Senate to assume a persuasive
lobby type function in its
methods of developing and
passing legislation.
Jones said he had seen "many
bills produced in good faith but
without the information to back
them up." Through more effec
tive communication with other
campus bodies, joint study
and work, these "pitfalls"
can be eliminated, according to
Jones.
The Student Senate currently
is studying ways to make itself
a more effective legislative
body and asked Jones to present
his views on the subject.
During a question and answer
period following his talk, Jones
was asked what is being done
to aleviate the campus parking
problem. He said plans call*for
an addition to the Blossom
Street parking garage and,
when the money becomes avail
able, a block-long parking gar
age for 1,500 to 2,000 cars would
be constructed between Pendle
ton and Senate streets.
When asked about the issue
of closing Green st., Jones said
he favored it, but concrete evi
dence must be presented to city
council before they will con
sider the idea. He pointed out
that a study sponsored by Stu
dent Government and managed
by a consulting firm had been
taken two years ago that
showed the need for the closing,
but that the study had been lost
and another was needed.
Senator Mike Michaelski- pro
duced part of the study, how
ever.

The Senate passed a resolu
tion asking the President and
Board of Trustees to declare
Monday, Jan. 29, "a day devoted
to reflection on the war and its
effects and that class time on
that day be so used."
The I'esolution was
introduced by Senator Wood
and cited the 40,000 Americans
who died and the long-awaited
return of both POW's and MIA's
as the basis for the day's reflec
tions.
Senator Ward introduced a
resolution asking the administ
ration to provide an alternative
parking plan for University
Terrace residents who now are
required to pay $60 a year to
park in the Blossom Street gar
age.
Because "young married stu
dents attending this university
more often than not do so on a
very limited and strict budget,"
the resolution states that the
parking requirement might
cause an "unfair financial hard
ship on married families" and

legislation was sent to commit
tee for further study.
Ward also introduced legisla
tion asking the President to
bring the campus lighting level
up to federal guidelines by pro
viding temporary security
lighting.
Federally assisted schools
must comply with minimal
illumination levels now set at
1.5 vertical footcandles. "Upon
investigation we find number
ous areas (at USC) that do not
begin to reach this level,"stated
the resolution.
"The effect of the temporary
lighting will, in many cases, ful
fill the need for security and
pedestrian illumination until
long range plans can be for
mulated and implemented"
according to Ward.
Absent from Wednesday
night's session were Senators
Mary Amaker, Doug Calvert,
Gladys Feely, Gregory Lee,
Glenn Manning, Charlotte Yar
borough and Steve Zagoria.
3 decrease
ter locks were needed for the safety
of their bikes.
Registration of bikes was greatly
resented by students last year as the
campus police tried to use this
method as a means of preventing
bike thefts.
