Carolina, who has had troubles on
the road, travels to Chicago Satur
day to meet Illinois, who is sparked
by former ACC player Jeff Dawson.
The sharpshooting Dawson con
currs with the thought that Big Ten
basketball is on a par with any
league in the nation...specifically
the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Dawson should know. For the first
two years of his college career he
paraded his talents at Duke Univer
sity in the Atlantic Coast Confer
ence.
"Top to bottom, there's no league
in the country that has as many
good, big, physical teams as the Big
Ten," winced Dawson. "The
individual talent in the Big Ten
equals the Atlantic Coast Confer
ence. The ACC teams concentrate
most of their efforts on beating each
other so there is no way of knowing
exactly where everyone stands, but
I'll vote for the Big Ten."
Dawson was one of the most
highly recruited players in Illinois
prep history four years ago while
playing for Downers Grove North.

recruiting eye did not deceive him
then. Schmidt worked overtime try
ing to get Dawson to follow his
brother (Jim) to Illinois.
But Dawson chose Duke and
showed all sorts of promise by
averaging 20 points for the Blue
Devil frosh team that went 16-0. His
sophomore season he played in all
30 games for Duke and averaged 9.6
points per game. His big nights
came against North Carolina State
(28) and North Carolina (22).
Dawson decided to transfer to
Illinois after his sophomore season
for "personal reasons".

best.
After missing his junior season
under Big Ten transfer rules, he has
returned to help the Illini to a 7-4
start this year and a 2-1 Big Ten
mark.
Wearing his brother's number
(24) -- he requested it -- Dawson will
carry a 19.9 scoring average into
Chicago Stadium appearances
against Notre Dame (Jan. 25) and
South Carolina (Jan. 27).
His brother Jim was a three year
regular for the Illini (1965-67), was
captain, Most Valuable Player and
all Big-Ten in 1967. Jim Dawson is
the eighth leading scorer in Illinois
history for a Big Ten career.
"Jeff has been a big factor in our
surprising start," according to
Coach Harv Schmidt. "His outside
shooting, ball handling and court
confidence has given us a capable,
if not superb, guard line when you
consider the improvement of sopho
more Otho Tucker."
"There's really no question the
Big Ten will prove me right this
year," says Jeff. "'Meeting those
big, bruising teams in the second
half of the season is going to be a
great experience."
