Sports Editor Carolina's youthful track team will get its first taste of competition in an indoor meet with Southern Illinois and Ten nessee, Saturday at Knoxville. Bill McClure, beginning his second season at USC, is not expecting his team to challenge for the team win. He is, how ever, anxious to see his team perform for the first time in competition. "I really don't expect to be in contention for the meet winner," said McClure. "Ten nessee and Southern Illinois both have extremely strong indoor teams. Both schools have indoor facilities (Carolina does not have an indoor track), and the difference between running indoors and running outdoors is the difference between night and day. "We've been working since September," McClure con tinued, "and the meet will be sort of a motivational thing for us. It'll-give us an indication as to what kind of shape we're in." While they will be favored to take very few places, Carolina does have the personnel that could pull a few upsets. McClure indicates that it could conceivably come from one of the short sprints. "Billy Novo (60-hurdles), Jim Small and Milt Reid (both in the 60-dash) could pull a surprise in the short races," said McClure. "Those events can be decided by a good start, and they're both pure speed races." As McClure indicated, Carolina may be a bit outclassed in their first meet of the season. Tennessee and Southern Illinois are annually powerhouses among the nation's indoor squads. Tennessee has three runners who, when at the top of their form, take a backseat to few col legians in their particular event. Darwin Bond, whose spe cialty is the 440 out-of-doors, will run anything from the 60 to 600, and be a threat to win, on Saturday. Doug Brown, an Olympic steeplechaser for the United States, will run the two-mile for Easy To Open Gamecock Charge Account, *10 (Limit) BRITTON S u Itrac I ndoor c the Vols. In the recent cross country season he was second in the NCAA championships. Track star Scha per redshirted Jim Schaper, Carolina's middle distance track runner, has been red shirted for the 1973 season, US coach Bill McClure announce Monday. A native of Atlanta, Schaper is junior, and he will be eligible fo track again starting with the 197 season. McClure cited naggin injuries as the reason for the action. "He needs to get completely wel again," McClure said. "He's had nagging injuries for the past two years, and he and I both agreed that he should stay out of competitio for a year." Schaper ran in the recent cross ountry season, but had to cut the season short because of a metatarsil injury, which also hampered him in he 1972 outdoor track season. The other Tennessee star is half-miler Willie Thomas, who won the NCAA crown last year. He'll be in the 600 for the meet Saturday. Southern Illinois may not have the depth in the running events that Tennessee pos sesses. However, their miler David Hill recently ran a 4:02, and is the favorite in that event. JACKETS Pla PANTS .. SWEATERS team season Despite the quality runners, McClure looks for the high jump to be one of the top events to watch. Southern Illinois has Mike Bernard, who has cleared seven feet this season. He'll have competition from the Vol's Marck Branch, a freshman who cleared 6-10% as a high school senior. McClure hopes for one of his young performers to rise to the competition in the high jump. He said, "Ron Adams (freshman from Columbia) is looking real good in the high jump and can go anywhere from 6-6 to 6-8. He's a real competitor and I hope the competition can push him to 6-8 or so." Now that Jim Schaper is on the redshirt list for this season, McClure is depending on three runners to take up the slack Schaper's absence leaves. "We'll still be strong in the half-mile (ot 600 indoors)," insisted McClure. "Don and John Brown and Mike Sheley should rise to the challenge of the redshirting of Jim." As for the meet Saturday, McClure is expecting his team to learn much from the experi ence of meeting teams as strong as the two they will be facing. "Tennessee and Southern Illinois are in the competition for the NCAA indoor title every year," said McClure. "We can learn a lot just from competing against tough competition like that."
