The Soccer Club will hold its first
1973 meeting Wednesday after
noon, January 24, at 4:30 in Room
317, Russell House. All interested
students, male and female, should
attend this meeting.
For the first time in its history,
the USC Soccer Club will open its
membership to females. While the
girls are not likely to play in the
games, they will play an important
role in helping the club work toward
its objectives.
The club has two objectives. The
first is to promote an interest in
soccer in the University and in the
community. The second is to

In working towards the first, the
club attempts to play the brand of
soccer that will attract interest and
attendance. This last season, great
progress was made toward that aim
as the club enjoyed its best season
in history with a 6-3-1 record.
The club will also continue with
other promotional projects as putt
ing on soccer demonstrations at the
grammar and middle schools, con
ducting clinics for youth leagues,
and providing coaches and referees
for the Columbia Soccer Youth
League

Freshmen
schedule
canceled
Carolina has cancelled the
remainder of its 1972-73 freshman
basketball schedule since all five
scholarship freshmen are now play
ing with the Gamecock varsity.
Carolina had played only two
freshman games, defeating a navy
team from Little Creek, Va., 76-58
on Dec. 4, and losing 96-75 to Palmer
College of Charleston Dec. 9.
Two scholarship freshmen, 6-5
Jim Clements of Washington. D. C.
and 6-6 Mark Greiner of Charlotte,
N. C., played in those two games
along with several non-scholarship
players. Both Greiner and Clements
have also dressed out with the
Gamecock varsity along with other
freshmen Alex English, Mike Dun
leavy and Bob Mathias.
Freshman games that have been
cancelled include Palmer College of
Columbia next Monday night; at
Fort Jackson Jan. 25; The Citadel
Jayvees Jan. 31; at Palmer of
Columbia Feb. 3; at Anderson
Junior College Feb. 5; at The Citadel
Jayvees Feb. 12;

Spring football practice at
Carolina will begin March 26
and is scheduled to end with
"Cockfight '73", the annual
intra-squad game on April
27.
The Annual spring clinic
for high school coaches will
be held April 14.
Coach Paul Dietzel and a
revamped coaching staff
will have 36 lettermen plus
sophomores up from a 4-2-1
freshman squad to work
with this spring. The
Gamecocks are expected to
install the Veer offense dur
ing spring practice.
