Two USC players, Kevin Joyce and Alexander English,
were named to the All-Tournament team. Joyce had 54
points in the three USC games, while English had 62 points
and 33 rebounds, both total highs for Carolina.
In the opening game of the tournament, Dec. 26, Carolina
topped previously unbeaten Villanova 80-64. English led the
way with 23 points, and Joyce, 16, and Dunleavy, 14, also
scored in double figures.
Many people were surprised with the play of the two
USC freshmen, English and Dunleavy, in their first game
in Madison Square Garden. Among those was McGuire. "I
was very surprised at the way the freshmen played their
first time in the Garden," he said.
* Manhattan, improved 100 percent from last year, gave
the Gamecocks all they could handle before falling 79-69,
Dec. 28, in the second round of the tournament.
The game's big story was Carolina's Danny Traylor. In
the first half Joyce was 0-8 from the field, Dunleavy 0-4
and English 1-2, but Traylor picked up the slack and played
the best half of basketball in his career.
The seven-footer was 8-12 from the field and had 11
rebounds in the first half. His 21 points gave the Gamecocks
a 37-25 lead at the half.
