C. 29208 Monday, January 22. 1973 44 Spinazz BY BLAKE LORICK USC Student Government President David Spinazzolo said he was surprized Michael J. Mungo, a member of the USC Board of Trustees and a Columbia subdivision developer, presented VIP memberships for his Cold Stream Country Club to members of the S. C. General Assembly. But Spinazzolo said he didn't consider the present improper. "I'm sure Mungo's inten tions are good in the fact that he will be up for re-election," Spinazzolo said. "Members of the General Assembly could and may have miscon strued his intentions. They are his memberships and he can do what he wants with them."~ Mungo is up for board re election next year and is opposed by William Bowan. The General Assembly selects board members. In the letter Mungo said: "It is my pleasure each year to extend the courtesy of my Cold Stream Country Club to you and the other members of the General Assembly. The memberships are valued at $137,000 based upon initial membership fee of $500 and monthly dues. Page 2. mproper Mungo has said, however, these were only token mem berships and their value was nominal. He said, "This courtesy is not a deed to the property and is merely so members of the General Assembly and constitutional officers may use the facility while they are in Columbia. I didn't intend for them to wrap it up and take it home with them after they were finished. Memberships to Cold Stream are not for sale , and if they were they would cost a minimum of $1,000 a year." Mungo said he felt a wrong impression had been given in the Columbia Record by implying the gifts may be improper. Several members of the General Assembly indicated they may return the gifts including Reps. Weston Adams and John Lafitte of Columbia.
