Winless GSU face Carolina BY BILL GRANT Sports News Editor After many highly successful seasons in the NCAA's small college divisions the person in charge of Georgia Southern basketball decided it was time to move up and play ball with the big boys in the University division. Judging from the results of the Eagles' first three games, that person,and the schedule-maker should be out looking for another job. The Eagles come into tonights 8:00 clash sporting an unblemished 0-3 record. Granted, two of the losses have been to top-ten members Florida State and North Carolina State. But the third setback was at the hands of Old Dimin ion, which doesn't conjure up thoughts of the Walton-gang out west. Not to say that GSU isn't dangerous. The Eagles put quite a scare into No. 2 Florida State before falling apart in the second half and losing 109-97. And they only trailed N. C. State by 13 at the half before State realized what was happen ing. To say that GSU lack something on defense would be quite an understatement. In three games Georgia Southern has given up an average of 119 points a game, which will not win many games for you. On the other hand, Georgia Southern can also score points. The Eagles have averaged 97 ppg, which should put USC's variety of defenses to the test. Pacing the Southern attack are juniors Johnny Mills and Richard Wallace, who coach J. E. Rowe has called, "two of the finest sophomores in the nation." Mills a 6-5 forward averaged 24.3 ppg as a sophomore while connecting on 52 per cent of his shots. Wallace, who paced Georgia Southern with 27 points against the Seminoles, set Southern records last year. These two pro vide most of the firepower for the Eagles attacks. Aside from their porous defense Southern's main problem is a lack of heigth. Richard Johnson, 6-8, is the tallest member of the squad and will not start. Johnson substained an ankle injury earlier this season and will be slowed if he plays. Relief help is supplied by 6-5 fr;;shman Dick Beuke. Mike Pitts, 5-11, is slated to start in the backcourt opposite Wallace and is the playmaker and signal-caller for Georgia Southern. The Eagles are a quick, good shooting team -the type that can provide Carolina with problems. But given Southern's lack of both defense and heigth Carolina should come out with win number three.
