Pity the Michigan State basket
ball team. After years of mediocrity
the Spartans finally think they have
the type of team that can challenge
for the Big Ten championship.
That's great. Except Minnesota,
Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana
are all in the Big Ten, all in the
nation's top twenty and will all prob
ably finish ahead of Michigan State.
Well, there's always next year.
But MSU isn't about to roll over
and play dead for another year.
While they don't have the super
stars, the depth or the experience
of the four other Big Ten conten
ders, Michigan State, 13-11 last sea
son, has built their team up quickly
and given another year may be a
genuine threat to the Midwest pow
ers.
So far this season the Spartans
are 1-1 with a two-point win over
Toledo and a nine-point loss to Ken
tucky. That is about the way
everyone figured those two games
would go.
Saturday night at the Coliseum if
everything goes as planned
Michigan State and Carolina should
play a close game. The Gamecocks
should rate the slight edge because

tage and (2) they are coming off a

When you talk about the top
players in the Big Ten Alan Hor
nyak, Henry Wilmore, Jim Brewer,
et al. are always mentioned. Ever
hear of Mike Robinson? Not many
people outside of Lansing have. He
was the leading scorer in the Big
Ten last year, as a sophomore. The
last person to do that was Rick
Mount.
Robinson, not surprisingly, is the
Spartans top scorer (21.5) after two
games. He's only ; Think that's
small? The other , SU starting
guard is Gary Ganakas. He's 5-5 and
the smallest starter in college bas
ketball, maybe in high school, too.
Up front, where Carolina played
poor against Tennessee, great
against Nevada-Las Vegas,
Michigan State has three players of
only average height who can both
score and rebound.
The center is Bill Kilgore, a 6-7
senior. Through two games he is
averaging 19.5 points and 10.5
rebounds. That is a little better than
was expected of him.
Lindsey Hairston, a 6-7 sopho
more forward, was billed as one of
the great new talents in the Big Ten.
His averages are 12.5 and 10.5, not
quite as good as was expected of
him. The other forward is Allen

If everything goes as it should,
Carolina.
Rick Mousa was perhaps the big
gest cog in the Gamecock machine
aas he started the Carolina effort
off with a three-point play to put
USC into a lead that they never lost
during the entire affair.
The Gamecocks grabbed a 5-2
lead on scores by Mousa and merely
continued to pad their advantage
throughout the game, holidng a 44
28 advantage at halftime and
stretching it out to a 27-point mar
gin by game's conclusion.
"I was very pleased with our play
overall. Traylor had a fine night and
so did Mousa," said Frank McGuire
following the contest. "Joyce--well,
he always plays a great basketball."
Dunleavy showed tonight that
he's a great quarterback on the
court," said McGuire of his first
year guard who totaled three assists
on the evening. "He hasn't shown
it yet, but he can score, too. He's
playing gn a bad foot and that's
affecting his scoring, but he passes

Dunleavy commented after the
game, "I get just as much pleasure
out of getting the assist as I do scor
ing myself. And right now my scor
ing isn't needed that much."
Traylor discussed some of the dif
ferences of Monday's game from
that of Tennessee, ""We had a few
little problems up there on defense
at Tennessee and tonight we just
closed them up.
"Personally, in Tennessee I was
more concerned with boxing out
there their big man, but this game
I said 'the hell with that' and went
to the boards myself."
Numerous times Traylor came
away with either points or rebounds
and his improvement along with
that of Mousa and Winters com
plimented that of Joyce and Eng
lish. As a balanced squad the
Gamecocks rebounded--in more
ways than one--to even their season
record at 1-1.

The Carolina Biddies, with
scholarship players Jim Clements
and Mark Greiner leading the way,
manydefeated Phiblant Navy 76-58,
day night to open their 1972 cam
paign.
Clements and Greiner, the only
first-year scholarship players to see
action for the Biddies, each canned
24 points and combined to pull down
28 rebounds to pace the USC frosh
past the Gators, now 11-5.
Greiner grabbed 18 rebounds
while Clements accounted for 10
and USC's Tim Lewis finished with
16 to give the Biddies to a 16 points
first half advantage which they
never relinquished against the
taller Gators.
Abran Hoyett led the Phiblant
attack, hampered with poor
shooting--26.6 for the night, with 22
points.
Lewis, a forward, and guard Al
Barwick with 11 and 10 points were
the only other members of the USC
team to break into double figures.
The Biddies face Palmer College
in a Saturday 6 P.M., prior to the
varsity's clash with Michigan State.
