VOICE
Modern learning
TO THE EDITOR:
I was in the office of Contempor
ary University yesterday and want
to publically register my dismay
over what I found. Out of an underg
ziaduate enrollment of nearly
13,000, only some two dozen stu
dents have so far applied to C.U. for
the coming semester. It would seem
that everyone else is perfectly con
tent with their education.
If it is, in fact, oct the data
accumulated, but the way in which
this data is directed toward problem
solving that is central to the educa
tional process, who would pass up
the chance to receive academic rec
ognition fo: flexing those problem
solving muscles on a topic that holds
a personal interest?
Clearly, there are thousands of
students whose curiosities are suf
ficiently engaged within the exist
ing classroom structure to make
these four years rewarding. I
greatly fear that there are
thousands of others whose
curiosities are not satisfied within
that structure, but who despair (or
are too damn lazy to look) at finaliz
ing something of value of their own.
It takes just one idea, one ques
tion, one weak spot in the
accumulated perspective that
needs strengthening. The method
of investigation can be refined as
it becomes necessary under the
very helpful guidance of the C.U.
staff and in consultation with other
C.U. students working on fre

I pursued a goal under C.U. last
spring; a- goal which has since
proven not the central one of my
education. In that pursuit I took at
least as many false steps as right
ones but the experience of my own
blunders was meaningful as that
small success I met with.
I don't expect here to turn the tide
of complacency on this campus, or
even to suggest that I am myself
immersed in its causes. But for
those who read this, who have at
least one idea they want to explore
now, and who have the energy to
walk all the way over to the
Humanities Office Building (it's

suggest that you talk to someone at
C.U.?

Stuff and Nonsense! You've missed
the whole point!" Your*one chance
to be an art critic and you blew it!
In order (he said pompously) to
understand the film you must go
back beyond your premises of stag
nancy, your platonic relationships
and your muddled thematic treat
ments, back to the subject or the
premise if you will, on which the
film is based.
No, Virginia, the film is not about
relationships between people, it's
not about relationships at all. The
movie is about art. It might almost
be a manual on how to be handled
by humans for prospective "Ob
jects d'arts". What is the single
most important item in the film?
What is the most enduring single
entity? Quite simply it is the art.
It certainly isn't Gaudier. I hardly
think it might be Sophie, and what
is left? The art. And as far as the
Art personified was concerned, an
artist was not even needed, or that
amended to say that no one artist
can be vital to Art. Art is pre- and
post-existent. It might in fact be
existent on an independent plane.
Looked at from a position other
than Mr. Dugas', The "stylized fash
ion (in which) the women's rights
and labor reform organizations"
even the relationship between
Sophie & Henri are treated become
mere intrusions into the separate
peace of the world of art. It is not
necessarily the relationship
between Henri and Sophie which
sparks the art. One eught to be left
with the feeling that the art would
have emerged on its own. Did you
not sit through the final scene in the
art show? For God's sake whatever
made you think that the relationship
between the two sustained Sophie
after Henri was killed? Did you look
at that woman's face during the art
show scene? That woman was sus
tained? Garbage!
This is why Rusell did not create
a film that was a treatise on the

S. U. plus One
TO THE EDITOR:
This letter isn't really directed to
you but rather to the students of
U.S.C. You know if you weren't at
the Coliseum Friday night you
really missed out on one of the
greatest things that our Student
Union has done. I'm talking about
the Winter Formal. I must compli
ment all who put effort into its crea
tion and success.
Of course one of the nicest things
about the dance was that there
weren't a mass of people jammed
together. Perhaps the mention of
the Loonis McGlunan(?) Orchestra
playing, scared most away. But the
gentlemen musicians, quite out of
our generation, satisfied everyone.
The sandwiches, cookies, punch
and even champagne were great.
You didn't even have to have a tux
to attend. Now look what you
missed out on!
Thank-you very much Student
Union, and season's greetings to ya
too!

I also wonder if the students and
faculty realize that "Spiderman"
attends the University. The rumors
I have heard are truly amazing. It
is said he seduces women, drinks
booze for breakfast, climbs any

if anyone can do this he deserves

EDITOR'S NOTE:
We have no idea if Deitsel intends
on beating Clemson next year. We
also assume that you do not mean
for your sentence to be-taken liter

our football team going to beat
Clemson's next year?" In that

have repressed sex drives and must
vent their frustrations somewhere
when the football team loses. Then
too, his seasons are almost always
losers too, thus providing, local
bookies with much better odds than
they normally have. These are the
two best reasons we can find to keep
Dietzel.
As for your other question, the
editor of the Gamecock is really
Spiderman. However, if I had my
druthers, I'd much rather be Super

invulnerability, are much more
suited to an editor.-The Editor.
