Group blasts Dietzel, USC football program BY SUSAN PACQUET In the Sunday, Nov. 19 edition of the "State" a half page advertise ment leveled a blow at USC's foot ball program and Coach Paul Diet zel in particular. The ad raised questions on the terms of Dietzel's contract and the reason for the team's poor perfor mance on the gridiron this year. The ad was sponsered by a Carolina alumni group, members of which are all half or full scholarship donors. Chairman of the group is Randolph W. Hope, president of a local insurance firm According to Hope the purpose of the ad was to raise questions and serve as a trumpet call to arounse public response on these questions. Hope said it was not intended to arouse people into forcing the dis missal of Dietzel. Hope said, however, that he and his group are dissatisfied with the coach's performance, adding "I do not think Dietzel is a good coach." Hope went on to say that the year after the 1969 season, the year of the Peach Bowl, USC had 36 return ing lettermen and 22 of the best propects comprising a team which did no better than a 4-6-1 season. "Football is a big business," Hope said. This year $700,000 was donated to the university's football program by alumni members, which, he added, was more than any other school in the United States had received. Hope said that the ad was an attempt to pressurre the University into answering such questions as :Is Dietzel getting a percentage of the concessions ? When does his con tract end? Was his contract extended before or after his trip to Denver? Hope said the response from the ad was generally in agreement with the statements in the $490 ad. Those letters which disagreed were anonymous, he said. Hope is a 1951 graduate of USC and is a full scholarship donor as are most of the men in the group. The argument that ACC rules had hampered the performance of the team in the past was contested by Hope. He cited the fact that UNC and North Carolina State both received bowl bids after this past season under the same rules. Mean while USC was able to beat Wake Forest out of the four ACC teams it played, he said. Hope added that a bad season isi not the reason for the groups dis enchantment with the coach.
