The fighting Illini started out like the proverbial house on fire winn ing nine of the first ten and drawing attention from the national polls ters. Then things begain to fall apart for Harv Schmidt, now in his sixth year at Champaign. Maybe because of too much Christmas cheer, Illinois managed to win only five more ball games after the Holidays, to finish 14-10, way back in the Big Ten pack. Much of the blame for the slide was placed on the guards, hampered by the loss of talented Greg Wilson at midseason. "The guard play has to improve with the addition of Jeff Dawson, a transfer from Duke," Schmidt said assessing the important guard position. Marquette has built up quite a record under the able guidance of Al McGuire and moved into the 72 73 season with three remarkable streaks on the line--six straight sea sons of 20 or more victories; six ansfer DE ;agging II enrolled at Duke where he had exceptional success as a freshman (20 ppg), but only saw limited duty as a sophomore, averaging 9.6. The 6-1 175 pound Dawson missed all of last season due to Big Ten transfer rules, but according to Schmidt appears to have lost none of his playmaking flair and shooting capabilities. The other backcourt slot is not as yet set, as Schmidt employs an alternating platoon system. He has a number of candidates none of which appear to be particularly out standing. Basically the same situation faces Schmidt at forward, where one posi tion remains still in doubt. The other will be manned by All America candidate Nick 'Spoon' Weatherspoon, a 6-6 senior, who has been elected captain of the club by his teammates. The Warriors have only one spot to fill in the starting lineup--the spot left vacant by the departure of 6-10 Bob Lackey--but McGuire is not thinking in those terms. The pivot position is on Schmidt's troubled mind. He does not like the idea of going to war in Big Ten bas ketball with only a 6-6 center. A two year letterman, 6-6 Nick Conner will be outsized almost all winter by his opponents, but he is the only experienced pivotman on the team. "His size won't allow him to play physically with most of the people we will see. We can only hope we can adjust his quickness and jump ing ability," said Schmidt. On top of that Conner has a knee problem If Conners doesn't work out Schmidt might move Weatherspoon to center or, more likely, rush 6-11 frosh Bill Rucks into the lineup. This does not seem to be the year for Illinois.
