both should have made the decision
to bring Lee in a joint session. "If
you co-sponser an event there
should be five representatives from
each group on the committee." As
it was Prince was the only represen
tative from Afro at the meeting and
this because he was a member of
both groups. Prince has since quit
the Lectures Committee.
Hal Poe, chairman of the Lectures
Committee, said the committee
didn't consider the possible nega
tive reaction to the reconsideration
action by blacks in Afro and those
on the committee. He added that he
was disappointed in the committee
for changing its mind after the deci
sion had been reached and the funds
approved. Poe said the only good
that came out of the incident was
the guidelines that have been for
mulated since for cosponsorship
which gives the co-sponsoring
group equal representation in deci
sion making.
On co-sponsorship Ness said that
many special interest groups on
campus such as Afro are forced to
ride "piggy-back" on the union
because their funding is too small
for good activities programs. Ness
said that it is the responsibility of
the Student Allocations Committee
to see to it that adequate funds are
available for the special interest
groups. However, Scott Derks, a
student member of the allocations
committee, said that the union had
told the board last year that if its

The fact remains that Afro was
forced by the lectures committee
decision to bring Lee out of its own
funds, which are miniscule com
pared to the $12,000 that lectures
is allocated. Afro received $3,000
this year from the Student Alloca
tions Committee. Afro is operating
in the red as a result of this incident.
Also the union was to pay $400 for
the Black Ball the last night of Black
Week. Prince said this money never
came from the union and that he
personally "walked the check
through" the night of the ball.
Ness, however said the money
was on its way this week saying it
takes a good deal of time to get these
checks processed. No communica
tions have been passed between
Afro and the union since Black
Week in a building where both
groups have offices on the second
and third floors respectively.
The fact also remains that due to
the final vote on the lecture of Don
L. Lee, which was split along racial
lines, tempers are still hot among
blacks many of whom think that the
decision not to bring Lee was
racially oriented.
One giant step backwards in a
struggle which many would like to
see come to a final end.
