Black general
recruits Friday

A self-made, black brigadier
general will be on campus Friday
to talk to students about Air Force
careers and to attend an AFROTC
formal dining-in.
Brigadier Gen. Lucius Theus,
Special Assistant for Social Actions,
will talk to any interested students
3 p.m. Friday in the Commons Room
of the Russell House.
Col. Clyde P. Evely, professor of
Aerospace Studies, said that the
general will speak on "the pros and
cons of the Air Force as a career."
He is available to the University to
discuss problems in the military,
how we go about solving them and
how we qualify minorities to
become officers in the Air Force."
Evely said Gen. Theus will tell
"the steps the Air Force and other
services have taken to fully integ
rate things and give everybody an
equal chance."
Earlier in the day Dean Willie
Harriford, Assistant Dean for Spe
cial Projects, will host a small
luncheon for the general at Top of
Carolina. He will be guest speaker
at the AFROTC dining-in foral
dinner at 6 p.m.
Gen. Theus, a Tennessee native,
entered the Air Force as a private
in 1942. While in service he earned
a B. S. degree from the University
of Maryland, a master's degree in
business administration from

He has served in Vietnam and was
chairman of the Inter-Service Task
Force on Education in Race Rela
tions whose recommendations led
to the establishment of the Defense
Race Relations Institute and the
Department of Defense-wide
education program in race rela
tions.
The general has earned the Leg
ion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Air
Force Commendation Medal with
one oak leaf cluster.
