USC' BY GARY WEST Sports Writer Carolina's 7-6 loss to Clemson last Saturday was probably summed up best by Coach Paul Dietzel, "when you win this one its a super victory, but when you lose its a super defeat." . The 70th renewal of this inter state rivalry was indeed a "super defeat" for the Gamecocks who saw their season come to a close with a dismal 4-7 record. Though the game was not lacking in excitement 45,000 cold and wet fans withstood harsh weather con ditions to watch a defensive Carpent play rec When the announcement was made during the seventh annnual USC Association of Lettermen foot ball banquet that Dana Carpenter had won the "Garnet Spur" as Carolina's top defensive lineman or linebacker in 1972, teammates rose in a standing ovation. The demonstration was indica tive of the trememdous respect Carolina players and coaches have for the 5-10, 213 pound junior mid dle guard from Elmire, N. Y., who made 103 individual tackles, assisted on 27 others, caused three fumbles, recovered two fumbles and sacked opposing quarterbacks five times in an 11 game season. Carpenter also had a key pass interception in the Gamecocks' big 24-21 upset win that knocked Florida State out of a Peach Bowl bid. A high school star at Elmira Free Academy under coach Jerry Rushin, Carpenter prepped a year at the Manlius School, Manlius, N. Y., where he played for coach Whitey Anderson, before signing a grant-in-aid with Carolina. As a sophomore in 1971, he par ticipated in 271 plays for the Gamecocks, making 31 individual tackles, 14 assist , and recovered one fumble. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown against Maryland. By the second half the out come was never to be questioned. "These freshmen thought that they would beat the varsity tonight," said Coach Frank McGuire following the intra'squad affair. "They were very dissap pointed after their loss and that is a good sign. "You've got to remember that this is the largest crowd that any of these freshmen have ever played before." Clemson's Jimmy Williamson knocked down a pass for a two point conversion by Carolina with 5:07 left in the game and the Gamecocks hopes of victory went down too. True, Carolina did get the ball twice more and attempted a last sec ond field goal, but as quarterback Dobby Grossman lay flat on his face after a two point conversion attempt it was indicative of the result. Coach Dietzel explained the play. "It's a rollout option, said Dietzel, and he was trying to throw to Tom r's fine 2gnize d Carpenter edged out a couple of out standing seniors for the "Garnet Spur" award. Tackle John LeHeup was named to the Coaches' All America team and has been selected to play in the Shrine East West game in San Francisco and the Hula Bowl in Honolulu. Linebacker Rick Brown was elected permanent captain of the 1972 Gamecocks by teammates and has been chosen to play in the Senior Bowl game in Mobile, Ala. "Dane Carpenter is one of the toughest and one of the finest mid dle linemen I have ever had the pleasure of coaching," coach Paul Dietzel said. "He was our leading tackler all season and certainly deserves the Garnet Spur award. He will be out top returning defen sive player next year and I am cer tainly looking forward to having his leadership and outstanding play for another year." Carpenter, who had stuck his head into the path of fast-moving ball carriers so many times that he has the battered facial features of a boxer, doesn't do much talking off the football field. He obviously feels that actions speak louder than words. "It's a great honor. I appreciate it very much," just about summed up the hardnosed middle guard's comments upon receiving the award. McGuire, who was pleased with the play of both his varsity and frosh players, added a few thoughts on the use of his first-year men in Saturday night's opener at Tennes see. "It's only the beginning of the season and this team will improve as he season progresses. 'We'd bet ter get those freshmen in right from the start and get them ready to play. "Right after Tennessee we play Nevada here Monday night and they might be even better than Tennes see. Jay Lynn Hodgin, who picked up 91 yards and scored USC's only touchdown, received the award for the Gamecocks. "It was a great win for Clemson," said Dietzel, "it was a tremendous effort by both sides, I can't faultithe effort, it was just one of those dais." "I can't make myself play for a tie. It was a see-saw battle back and forth and they didn't do anything we didn't expect and I'm sure we didn't do anything they didn't expect. Dietzel had much praise for mid dle linebacker Dana Carpenter. "Carpenter has been playing good football. He's a heck of a kid and is probably our most consistent defensive lineman."
