Film awaren

Motion pictures are in this
year as film awareness spreads
across college campuses and
the nation as a whole.
Two manifestations of the
cinema awareness appearing on
the USC campus are the growth
of movie cults and the develop
ment of accredited courses in
film experience. There are
several director cults and even
genre cults developing. For
example, there is a lurking body
of horror addicts on campus,
dedicated to the establishment
of a horror festival.
Perhaps of more interest to
the serious cinema student is
the presence of a three credit
course in Film Experience.
This program has grown to
include three sections of Film
Experience and a godson in the
German department covering
expressionistic German films.
The interest has been so great
that Mr. Gary Davis will be
arriving in the spring to set up
a. Baccalaureate degree prog
ram in Film Direction.
As the popularity of films has
grown, so have the number of
organizations catering to that
popularity. The Films Commit
tee of the University Union
operates with a budget of over
$15,000 and books free movies

twice a week. Off campus, Mr.
Mike O'Donell, Advertising and
Promotion manager for Irwin
Fuller Theatres reported that
the Gamecock I and II theatres
in Cayce are being booked with
the discriminating movie-goer
in mind. O'Donell said,
"Columbia Theaters, Inc. are in
the process of trying to arrange
a fine films festival at the start
of the second semester." There
are also intentions of booking
classic films of Charlie Chaplin
and W. C. Fields in double fea
tures.
To increase the opportunity
of USC students to view fine
films, Irwin Fuller Theatres,
along with the University
Union, is sponsoring the sale of
discount ticket cards. For an
initial purchase price of $1, one
card may be used repeadtedly
at the Gamecock I and II Thea
ters to obtain tickets for $1. The
card is good for all films shown
there, except for very rare
exceptions.

University Union Films Com
mittee and the responsiveness
of Columbia theatres, USC stu
dents have an unprecedented
chance to view fine films.
