State Seri. Eugene "Nick" Zeigler
thought he could put a coalition of
youth, blacks, staunch Democrats
and union supporters together to
defeat incumbent Sen. Strom Thur
mond in Tuesday's election--he was
wrong.
To lure the youth vote of the
state, Zeigler took the posture that
marijuana ought to be put in a class
separate from other illegal drugs
and that the states abortion laws
should be liberalized.
To lure the blacks, he continually
pointed to Thurmond's past seg
regationist philosophy, and the fact
that a Ku Klux Klan splinter group
was endorsing Thurmond.
Spending much more time than
Thurmond stumping the state dur
ing the campaign, Zeigler was
expected by most policitcal obser
vers to make a much better showing
at the poll where he lost a two to
one margin.

p.m. Tuesday at his Columbia head
quarters saying "This is only the
beginning of the war for the littlc
people until they are represented in
the legislature."
Tom Howard, Zeigler's news sec
retary, said "the electorate don'1
have the intelligence to vote foi
him."
With the incoming 93rd Congress
Thurmond will be in his 19th year
representing the people of South
Carolina and sits on two powerful
senate committees: armed services
mnd judiciary. He is described by
Richard Barnard, writing for the
Ralph Nadar report on Congress, as
man who thinks of himself as the
riend of the working people, but
arely uses his vote in the Senate
