On t1 The second annual WUSC - International Week marathon will be broadcast during International Week to raise money for "Little USC". WUSC announcers man the remote facilities in the Russell House and stay on the air "until they drop", according to Dave Warehime, station manager. The announcers solicit contribu tions over the air from students, generally in dorm or organization blocks. Last year, WUSC raised Nostalgia, U mark 'Sepa BY TERRY DUGAS "A Separate Peace", now showing at the Gamecock 1 theatre, is a period work in the style of "Summer of '42" and "The Last Picture Show." "...Peace", however, avoids the traps inherent in that genre and is effectively set in pre-WW II upper-class liberal New Eng land without having to point to itself and say "See how nostal gic I am." The story is one of maturity, vaguely reminisent of Catcher in the Rye. Gene, a young intel lectual boy of 17, is matured into a young sensitive man of 18 through a catharsis caused by his deliberate crippling and indirect killing of his best friend, Phineas. Phineas is a symbol of action to Gene, who is reserved by nature. After destroying Phineas' ability to act, Gene, in order to relieve his self torment, must assume that posi tion as symbol. In a most brilliantly photo graphed trial scene, dozens of Gene's peers, robed in the manner of judges, turn a mock tribunal into a black mass to war and initiate events which cause Phineas' eventual death and Gene's realization that life is based on action tempered by reason; not the pure action of For your Engraving Needs Have it done right I.'nall fli rnd & llperaled - -*Betwees P.aee& Phecal. Turner passed out after approximately 48 hours but Comeaux remained on the air for 68 hours. Also planned for this year is another "oldie war" pitting the champ, Dave "Orlando Moldie Oldie Blast from the Past Orlando" Warehime against two tough chal lengers. ineveness rate Peace' Phineas nor the pure reason of Gene but a merger of the two which can be accomplished only through Phineas' death. The most outstanding feature of "A Separate Peace" is its unevenness. The occasional brilliant cinematography and editing techniques are offset by amaturish acting and dialogue that, at best, can be described as rhetoric. The acting can be forgiven because the actors were ama tures, none of whom had ever appeared in a major motion pic ture. The screenplay, however, is a semantical abortion which could not have been handled by actors of far greater experi ence. Coming from the lips of 17 years old boys, the effect of this dealogue is comical and flaws an otherwise excellent film. Uncomplicatec by obscure symbolism yet meaningful and gentle to the mind, "A Separate Peace" is a a good movie to watch with a date. It will not be remembered as one of the 10 best films of 1972. It will, how ever, be remembered. It may not seem impor :ant to you, but for the members a :he Friendship Center it is. The Friendship Center is a socia rehabilatition center for both out ;atient .and in-mental patients o1 nyone who feels the center cai assist them. "Orgininally we worked witl )atients with emotional or menta )roblems. The patients felt a neet o meet and discuss problems anc ormed into a club to meet," saic Ars. Sue Nesmith, program coor linator for the center. The center, which is located a L830 Green St. received a gran1 rom the National Institute of Men al Health in 1961 and had its origir n 1960. "We started primarily witl eople who left the hospital and are iow in the community," said Mrs Jesmith. "At first the community vas not as accepting, but they arc nore enlightened now." "We work with people who not xS,, Iship Centi iental pati only leave the hospital but in patients who have three to five months before leaving the hospital. For example, maybe we can help in grooming, problems in com t municating, help them learn about themselves or maybe apply for a l job. People who have been in an institution sometimes feel insecure about these things," said Mrs. Nes mith. The center is open every morning Monday through Friday from 8:30 l a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Monday through Saturday 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 1 p.m. and provides various group activities. The evening groups par ticipate in activities such as danc ing, movies, roller skating, bridge instruction and various educational tours. When asked what type of prob lems the center faces. Mrs. Nesmith said, "probably having enough time and money. Many people have prob lems and call us and we try to respond, we try to help in any way and refer them to other sources. Before they had to hide their emotional problems. Now there are many resources probably dealing with more problems." Mrs. Nesmith said the Friendship Center is planning to start receiving in-patients from Crafts Farrow with drug and alcohol problems. "We will try to set up two groups, one group for those up to 23 years of age and the other for those beyond this age. They have problems dealing with living in society and they may or not be alike, nor are our members alike. If it presents other problems we can work it out. We'll integrate them into our present program, if we separate them they will feel indifferent and we must accept them." The program coordinator also emphasized the importance of their student volunteers from USC. "We are always impressed by the young people working here.
