Whether or not the university
should be involved in the collection
of money for an off-campus organi
zation is the main question concern
ing the right of the South Carolina
Public Interest Research Group
(SCPIRG) to collect money at the
same time students pay their fees,
Dr. William S. Brokington, of the
USC board of trustees said.
The board defeated the measure
nine to six Saturday allowing stu
dents to choose whether or not they
SpCPIR G an wanted to pay the $1.50 SCPIRG fee
each semester during registration.
The choice would be made on the
condition that all such funds col

controlled by a local SCPIRG board

Founders of the public interest
group had hoped their organization
would go statewide to investigate
and report in areas such as con
sumer and environmental protec
tion.
Dan Speights, senior law student
at USC, said similar organizations
have been allowed to form at
Erskine and Coker Colleges. Fol
lowing the denial, Speights said, I
just think it's sad that students
won't be able to get involved in the
project this year.
Markley Dennis, a member of the
board's committee, urged the
endorsement of the proposal. He
added the proposal came as a pro
duct of an outward manifestation of
the students' desire to improve
themselves and is a reasonable
proposition.
