The Deacon defense, if it seems possible, matched the offensive effort by giv ing up 386 yards to the Gamecocks along with those 35 USC points. With USC dominating the affair, the frustrations on the field had to belong solely to Wake. But even Wake could take some consolation in the fact that their first-period gift field goal stopped their being shut out streak at just two games. USC found their running game which had deserted them a week earlier against N. C. State and employed it so successfully against the Deacons that the Gamecocks were able to disregard the forward pass almost completely and yet still dominate the game offensively. Paced by Jay Lynn Hodgin, who rambled for 120 yards on 27 carries and scored three touchdowns, Carolina's ground game accounted for 358 of the USC total. Hodgin's 100-yard effort made him only the second USC running back to attain that goal in the last two years for Carolina, the other being Dickie Harris who ran past Wake last year for 108 yards and three touchdowns.
