Eckhardt replies
TO THE EDITOR:
In answer to your comment on my
letter about abortion, you again
avoided quoting the scripture in
Romans 3:3-4 so I will again quote
it to you: "For what if some did not
believe? Shall their unblief make
the faith of God without effect? God
forbid: Yea, let God be true, but
every man a liar."
First of all it was not me who in
any way condemned this coed for
her shameful act but the word of
God is that which condemns
unrepentant sinners. Exodus 20:13,
Galatians 5:21 and Revelation 21:8
and many others.
Secondly your remark about me
being out of touch with reality is
really going in line with most peop
le's misconception of God. The fact
is God is trying to get us to conform
to his image not trying into conside
ration mass starvation is kind of
avoiding the issue of this particular
incident. (Although it is WRONG
even for that reason.) This girl has
an abortion because of something
she had no right doing.
Lastly you stated that if a woman
wants to have an abortion she
should be able to with the minimum
of trouble. Well, in answer to this,
if you don't believe the Bible, why
let it worry you what a Christian
said? '
But remember, the reason man
needs salvation in the first place is
his insistance on doing what he
wants instead of what God put him
here for.

BOB ECKHARDT
Technique poor
TO THE EDITOR:
It appears that Robert Eckhardt
is the Self-appointed Evangelist of
U.S.C. What he doesn't seem to
understand is that it is easy to con
demn an act until one is faced with
the same problem. I, toe, am a
Christian and am proud of it but if
I were a non-Christian and had read
his sickening letter I would be
farther away from Christianity than
before! In short, Eckhardt's
technique is in POOR taste.

Both dogmatic
TO THE EDITOR:
I would like to reply both to
Robert Eckhardt's letter concern
ing abortion and to your editorial
criticizing him. You both appear to
be taking positions founded on little
else than dogmatism.
Mr. Eckhardt's opinion is that
abortion is a crime against God, and
to support this idea, he quotes
extensively from the Bible.
Whether the Bible is The Truth or
not is irrevelant here. In the first
place, as one scholar (whose name
I can't remember) once pointed out,
it is possible to justify almost any
position the way Mr. Eckhardt does
merely by juxtaposing the proper
Biblical quotations. Secondly, inas
much as debates on public issues
are supposed to be waged with
reason and facts, it is not enough
merely to say that "This is what the
Bible says; therefore it is the truth."
There are many people who do not
believe that the Bible is The Truth,
and among those who do, there is
no consensus as to what the Biblical
Truth is. All Mr. Eckhardt does
is to state an opinion and then say
that no one can be allowed to
criticize it. I do not deny his right
to do this, but it is not a very good
way to convince others of the cor
rectness of one's opinion.
Concerning the editorial reply: it

sonal decision. But the lack of some i
enduring moral standard destroys
morality. If there is no standard,
anything, including robbery, rape,
and murder, can be justified, 1
because, without some standard.
there is no way judge anything.
Who are we to say that a Charls
Manson belongs in jail? He may
only have been following a different
"moral standard." As with Mr. Eck
hardt, the editors are attempting to
place their opinion above criticism
(I am refering to the comment that
the coed who got the abortion
"should not be criticized.") by dog
inatically appealing to their par
ticular Truth; in this case, moral
relativism.
Further, the editors state that 1
abortion can be justified on the
basis of increasing population and 1
possible mass starvation. Since
when have they taken it upon them
selves to decide who shall live and
who shall die? If we carry this idea
to its logical conclusion, we shall
have to support euthemasia for the
old and the incurably ill. There is
no justification for killing now so
that we can avoid a possible danger
later.
Finally, it is often said that women
should be allowed to have control
over their own bodies. The objec
tion is both fallacious and irrevel
ant. It is not the woman's body and
life that are going to be destroyed
by the abortion, it is the baby's. No
one is asking the baby whether it
wants to be aborted or not. Besides,
if the coed had exercised sufficient
control over her body, she would
never have had to face the question
of whether she should get an abor
tion or not.

A better example is given later:
"The entire concert was geared

Bob Craft also mentioned that his

Any argument
rO THE EDITOR:
In regards to the abortion arti
:les, letters and editorials: we per
ionally do not believe in the act of
ibortion, considering the denial of
ife to any being (born or unborn)
o be an act of murder. However,
ve do not place ourselves in the
ilmighty and omniscient position to
udge - to condone or to damn -
he actions of anyone whose posi
ion may differ.
Still, we do not agree with your
tatement that "Not everyone
elieves in God, or the 'Bible kind
if God,' and in a country constitu
ionally dedicated to religious
oleration, religious arguments
gainst abortion have no place."
In a country such as this, ANY
rgument has a place, religious or
therwise, whether acceptable to
