30 per cent budgel
requested for Unia
A 30 per cent budget increase was asked for the
University of South Carolina Wednesday.
The University with current enrollment figures that
firmly establish it as a "senior institution," requested an
appropriation of $36,679,522 for 1973-'74.
President Thomas F. Jones and Vice President for
Business Affairs Harold Brunton appeared before the
State Budget and Control Board to detail USC's ap
propriation request, develop a five-year projection and to
diagnose current enrollment figures.
The University's proposed appropriation of $36,679,522
is nearly $8 million more than was appropriated for the
current fiscal year. Both Jones and Brunton emphasized
that the requested increase for the most part represents
the University's funding formula developed by the Higher
Education Commission and approved by officials of all
state supported colleges and universities.
The only major 'request other than funds for normal
operations at the University is for $300,000 to improve the
reference holdings of the law school library.
Current enrollment figures presented today as part of
the University's presentation to the Budget and Control
Board showed a main campus full-time equivalent
enrollment of 16,929 and a state-wide enrollment of
20,941. Total registration on the main and regional
campuses this fall was 23,723 students.
Incoming freshman registration this fall was listed as
2574, just 22 more than registered last year and well
within the self-imposed voluntary limits of 2500 freshmen
on the main campus with a plus or minus variance of ten
per cent.
