Everyone in the stands was fully
aware of the fact that Lower Rich
land's B team could have given the
Gamecocks a better struggle than
the Mountaineers did in Saturday
night's 41-7 loss. Even more evident
was the fact that USC probably

A classic gridiron struggle it
wasn't. Putting these two teams in
the same city, to say nothing of on
the same field, roughly resembled
Clemson facing Oklahoma (52-3). Or
Nebraska meeting a seletct group
of third-gracders all stars.
The Appalachian wishbone was
effective as a one-legged man in a
100-yard sprint race. Early in the
second quarter, the Mountaineers
often shifted out of it, with the ful
lback (Yes, the fullback) going in
motoion. The result was 95 yards
rushing. The passing attack, if pos
sible, was worse, netting 52 yeards.
USC was forced to punt on its first
two possessions before Dobby
Grossman continued his wizardry,
leading Carolina to touchdowns the
next four times it was on offense.
Once again, Mike Haggard proved
to be Grossman's favorite target, as
the sophmore quarterback con
nected with him on scoring plays
of 27 yand six yards, the second
coming on a fourth down play. In 1
between, Jay Lynn Hodgin scored 1
twice, both times from three yards i

Carolina could have easily scored
50 points by intermission. But Head
Coach Paul Dietzel substituted
freely, and USC held a slim 27-0
margin at halftime.
Grossman ran just one series of
plays in the second half, leading the
Gamecocks on a 61-yard scoring
drive climaxed by Hodgin's 11-yard
dash. Randy Spinks scored USC's
final touchdown with 5:36 left in the
game. Somewhere during the sec
ond half, Appalachain got on the
scoreboard.
Statistically-wise, the game was
a resounding success...provided the
opponent was Georgia or Tennes
see. Hodgin gained 90 yards in 19
tries, Grossman passed for 133 and
ran for 36 more. The defense
absolutely throttled Applachain, as

e considered as a great victory for
USC until one looks a bit deeper into
the ability of its opponent.
"Appalachian State was difficult
for us; to prepare for," Dietzel
admitted in his post-game com
ment. "But they stayed with us and
1 admire they're spunk. It's a real
tribute to them. They're line was a
bit tougher than we expected. They
are not a bad team and will be tough
when they put things together.

Once again, Dietzel's praise
;hifted to Grossman, who has now
:hrown five touchdown passes in his
last two outings. "One fellow out
there makes things happen, and
that's Dobby Grossman. From now

but he still did a fine job.
So, from the remainder of the sea
son, Carolina will face some compe
tent opponents. There will be no
more Appalachian State's, no more
easy rides. Every game will be a

Clemson. And no more Appalachian
