Coaching counsel
USC Coach Paul Dietzel discusses strategy with sophomore
quarte back Dobby Grossman during break in the action of
Carolir i's 34-7 victory over Memphis State two weeks ago.
Grossrm.an, who hurled three touchdowns in the game, is slated
to start Saturday.

And remember, all but FSU were previously considered
to be handy USC victories. Such is no longer the case.
Writers and fictiously-labeled experts will not give USC
the kind of football team people expect of Dietzel. The
sudden resurgence of an offense and defense gives some
reason for optimism in the coming weeks. Only when this
resurgense is accomplished against a truly good team will
the skeptics be quieted. If then.

Carolina's 1972-73 basketball C

Led by All-America candidate and p
Olympic team member Kevin Joyce c
at guard and towering 7-0 center t
Danny Traylor, Carolina is v
expected to field another potent /
quintet despite the loss of the other
three starters off last year's team, i
24-5 and third place finisher in the t
NCAA Eastern Regionals.
With freshmen now immediately a
eligible for varsity competition due
to the new NCAA ruling, all USC v
scholarship basketball performers V
will participate in the initial work- t
out. McGuire has seven lettermen t
returning off last year's squad, four
rising sophomores moving up from s
last season's 12-10 freshman squad f
and seven incoming freshman can- b
didates.
Filling some vacancies at the for
ward spots will probably be first on
the Gamecock agenda, with All
America Tom Riker and sharp
ihooting Rick Aydlett having com
pleted their eligibility. Guard Bob
Carver also left by the graduation
route and depth in the backcourt as
well as finding someone to back up
Traylor, may also pose problems.
The versatile Johce is the squad's
leading returning scorer with an
18.3 mark and is expected to be a
standout, while Traylor led the team
in rebounding with 10.7 per game
while hitting 14.3 ppg. Six-four
guard Brian Winter's is the top
reserve back with an 8.3 average,
while guards Casey Manning, 6-2,
5-11 Jimmy Powell, 6-5 forward
Rick Mousa and 6-5 swingman Billy
Grimes are other veterans who will
be in contention for playing time.
Newcomers to varsity workouts
will be 6-6 Tommy Cox, 24.0 ppg,
6-7 Clyde Agnew, 21.9, and guard
Jimmy Walsh and George Felton of
the 1971-72 freshman team and
freshman Joe Artime, 6-3, 6-4 Mark
