Columbia was one of more than
100 U.S. cities to observe "Be Some
body" Day Wednesday.
Sponsored by the Opportunities
Industrialization Center, Inc. (OIC)
the event was to focus attention on
the need for realistic job training
and placement programs for disad
vantaged Americans.
Local OIC executive director
Priscilla Hammond said the purr
pose of the event was to bring about
awareness. '.'Here in Columbia
that's a 100 per cent plus for us.
Many people did not know we were
here."
A part of OIC's presentation to at
least 40 communities was a closed
circuit television show featuring
noted stars including Aretha Frank
lin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Hope,
Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, Car
roll O'Connor and many others.
Columbia's closed circuit show
ing, held at Carolina Coliseum, was

Carolina's Association of Afro
American mstudents and other
groups of students at other schools
contributed to the organizations'
effort by selling tickets and helping
to publicize OIC among young
Columbians.
"Whatever money is raised is for
local facilities," Hammond said.
"We are subcontracted by national
OIC who receives much of its
money from the Department of
Labor and HEW." The funds from
the national organization help with
operating expenditures, she said,

"Industrial support for OIC Day
has not been as well as we expected"
Hammond said that only 10 com
panies bought patron's tickets,
which cost "25, to the show.
Chartered last November the
Columbia branch opened classes on
May 8. Day and evening classes are
offered, but most of them are
"female" oriented since about 97%
of the enrollment is female.
More "male-oriented" courses is
one of OIC's major projects. "Pres
ently, we are trying to work up a
drafting course," the director said.

To ease these strains "Transpor- in

She also hopes that a day-care
center may be set-up at the training cc

mothers and their children may be hi
