Funded by the U. S. Department of Transportation, the two-year study was conducted by the USC Center to find if available trans portation in Greenville, Charleston and Columbia 'prevents those in low-income brackets from getting to jobs or places of job training. "The majority of these residents," Larry Whitener, research coordinator of the project, said, "are well served by the present bus system. One new route is proposed to increase mobility and to provide service to an area where no service exists." This recommended route would begin its outbotmd trip at the Columbia busbarn and travel via Hampton-Oak-Laurel-Huger-I-26 St. Andrews Rd.-Bush River Rd. and end-at the G. E. Plant parking lot coveri1g a distance of 12 miles. This route, according to Whitener, would only be run at peak periods and would provide access to industrial locations not presently receiving service. The route's return trip into town would also carry inbound commuters to places of work ih the downtown area. The report also recommends that the present Eastway Park route, now operating with one-hour headways, be changed to run with one half hour headways during peak periods. This route, the report says, connects 17 industrial locations with more than 300 projected job openings to three low-income areas with some 200 people willing to work. The study also calls for the bus company to investigate the possibilities of half hour headways an the Capital Airport and F ort Jackson (Devine) routes. Homecoming nomination deadline set Deadline for Homecoming Queen nominations is noon, Friday, October 13. Each student organization may nominate one candidate as long as the candidate is a full-time student at USC. Entrants must turn in their name and social security number, sponsoring student organization, hometown, school address and phone number, and three 8 x 10 black and white glossy pictures all the same pose at the time they submit their entry.
