"Of course it's a little strange playing against Tom Owens. I almost find myself rooting for him at times." Owens and the Carolina Cougars needed none of Roche's morale support earlier that night when they downed the defending Eastern Division champion New York Nets, 117-103, in an exhibition game at Carolina Coliseum. Although it was only an exhibition, the game made evident the fact that the loss of Rick Barry changes the Nets from a league powerhouse to just another team, and the addition of Billy Cun ningham and Mack Calvin trans forms the Cougars from a cellar dweller to a title contender. Roche and the Nets were on the top of the ABA world last year when they upset the heavily favored Kentucky Colonels for the Eastern Division play-off title. Now they are struggling to gain respectability. "We're pretty disorganized right now," Roche admitted. But then he turned around and showed some hope by saying, "We have a lot of new players. We'll be all right. It won't take long. This is a team of unselfish players." Unselfish or not, the Nets have a ~" 1" e turned around. a leisurely whirl around I through your life. The the occasion.
