Tires (from page 3) If you've had a blowout, remove the old tire and tube completely, buy replacements of the same size, jockey one side of the new tire onto the rim and proceed the same as described above. Okay. Pump up the tire with the hand pump until your arms ache, put the wheel back on the bike taking care to replace the washers and nuts in the same order you took them off. If it's a three-speed rear wheel, get the axle ends back into the slots in the rear fork with the chain properly engaged with the toothy thing it rides on (this is the rear cog). Then pull back on the chain side of the axle until the chain is tight and tighten the axle nut on that side with your fingers. Holding that side in place, pull back on the other end of the axle until the tire is centered between the tubes that run from the rear axle up the housing that the pedal arms come out of. Tighten the axle nuts with a wrench and ride to the -nearest gas station. If the bike is a three-speed and the pedals spin around in second gear after you reassemble the cable connection, watch for next article in this series.
