Thursday, September 28 USC Theatre opens season The University of South Carolina Theatre blegins its second season Thursday, October 5 with the first of three performances of Dale Wasserman's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Each of the three performances - Oct. 5, 6, 7-will be staged in Drayton Hall on the USC campus. Each performance beg"ns at 8:15 p.m. with tickets price at $2.50 for the general public and $1 for students. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is the first of six productions scheduled for the Fall and Winter season by the USC Theatre Department. Others on the schedule include "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes; "Tom Sawyer," an original musical by Dr. Kay Bethea; "Camino Real" by Ten nessee Williams; Moliere's "The Misanthrope" and Ben Jonson's "Volpe ne." Russell Green, Head of the USC Theatre Department, is directing the production of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest." The Wasserman play is based on the Ken Kesey novel of the same name and is set in a mental institution. Wasserman's play appeared with considerable success on Broadway in the early Sixities, has had an unusually long run in San Francisco and has recently been revived in New York as an off Broadway production. Terry Bennett designed the set for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Erin Wertenberger is the costume designer and Jack Shirk is the technical director and lighting designer. Jim Sparger, a recent arrival from New Mexico and a professional stuntman, staged the exciting and painfully convincing fight scenes for the production. The play stars David Siskin and Nancy Dennis. Private group to institute award grant The Institute of International Studies has received the largest single allocation ever received by the University from a private organization. The grant of $412,000 was awarded by the Scaife Family Charitable Trusts of Pittsburgh, Pa. It is the second grant awarded to the Institute by the Scaife Trusts in the past four years. This makes a total of more than $1.3 million which the Institute has received in support from private sources supporting its work since its founding in 1961. Dr. Richard L. Walker, Director of the Institute since its creation, said the grant will support programs and activities over a three-year period. He said the Institute is struc tured to encourage research and interdisciplinary cooperation and production and in International Relations and foreign area studies. Under a recent academic reorganization, the Institute of International Studies will function in close cooperation with the Program of International Studies and Comparative Politics within the newly enlarged and combined Department of Government and International Studies at USC.
