the season for both teams,
Saturday at Sesquicentennial State

Schaper covered the three mile
course in 14:35, fourteen seconds in
front of the second finisher,
Clemson's Larry Rush.
"Jim has been working real hard
all summer and he ran a good
race," USC coach Bill McClure
said. "The course is more difficult
than most because a lot of it is over
sandy ground and that kept the
times up."
Sophomore Wayne Thomas was

The Carolina Biddies, utilizing a
opportunistic offense and a rugged
defense, romped past Appalachian
State's freshmen, 48-10, Friday
night at Williams-Brice Stadium.
"This was a good win for us,"
commented Bob Ryan, making a
successful debut as USC freshman
coach. "The boys did a good job for
a first game. You know this was
one of those games, 'you're sup
posed to win' but we had no trouble
getting them up for this one.
They've been waiting five weeks
for this game."
The Biddies capitalized on two
blocked punts and one pass in
terception to set up three of their
seven scores. Also the defensive
pressure on Appalachian's punter,
Mark Heath, was so great that
when he was given enough time to
get off a punt, he averaged only
19.4 yards per punt, giving the
Biddies excellent field position all
night. The defense also con
sistently stopped Appalachian's
option attack, allowing the 'Baby
Apps' only 168 yards total offense.
Our whole defensive unit did a
great job," says Ryan. "I was very
pleased with their performance. I
can single out Cato (Keith) for an
excellent job and Gary Mott put the
helment on a lot of people tonight,"
commented Ryan.

The Biddies used a ball control
type offense in the first half! with
tailback Russ Jackson and Randy
Chastain carrying most of the load.
With a 20-10 halftime lead, Ryan
elected to open up his offense and
test the Biddies passing attack,
giving all three frosh quarterbacks
Jeff Grantz, John McElveen and
Zeb Shue, equal time under fire.
"All three quarterbacks did an
outstanding job," Ryan said,
"McElveen probably had the best
statistics. We'll have to see the 4
films before we decide on who will
start next week. These three were
so even we were drawing straws to
see who would start this game."
McElveen, Jeff Grantz and Zeb
Shue combined for 118 yards
through the air. Grantz also had an
outstanding game as the Biddie
